We don't have county fairs here, but we have town fairs/Fete, wherewe have brass bands, gymnastic shows, an then all the stalls such as the coconut shy, tombola's etc and the bouncy castles and bouncy slides
Then later in the Autumn we have the local Agriculture Show where there is all the livestock and new and old farming transport an the homemade foods ie jams, cheeses etc

Tonight will be the fiddle contest
Sat will be another band
Then there are rides.
I wish it would be more than this, but it seems to work so far after 117 yrs, so why fix it?
Wish they would do more like a country fair,
with sewing, baking, cook-offs and things like that.
It is called the Pioneer and Old Setteler Reunion.
That's the closest thing we have to a fair.
We have a county fair and a state fair. The county fair was last week. They had all of the 4-H groups, agriculture, etc. This year for the first time, they also had carnival rides, and admission was way up. Our state fair will be held here in Lincoln for the last time this year. It is being moved to Grand Island, which is more centralized. It's held the last week of August, and has rides, food, concerts, etc. I usually don't go to either. I guess I'm just too much of a city slicker - lol! Plus, I don't really like carnival rides either.
Since Delaware only has 3 counties we have a State Fair the end of July. Our middle county has county fair in May but only has animals shown. The state fair is big and my 3 children show animals (cattle, sheep, goats n rabbits) as well as entries in 4-H building and numerous contests such as pretty animal n lead line . It is exhausting but strangely fulfilling , course it takes a few weeks to recuberate afterwards before I feel fulfilled though!!!
We just had our county fair. My children entered the 4H judging. My oldest (13 y.o. boy) made a strawberry rhubarb pie and maple divinity fudge. My 10 y.o. boy made donuts and pb fudge. My 9 y.o. boy made a garden flower arrangement and entered our beans & peas. And my 6 y.o. girl arranged wild flowers in a bouquet. The nice thing about the county fair is in most of those fields I listed they are scored but not competing against one another. They are given score sheets for points. So for instance if two of them are in the same field they can both get blue ribbons (90 points and up). The pie contest is the only one that has only one blue, one red, etc. There is only one best of show given as well for each category which would be like the overall blue for each category. We recieved 3 of those which was great. They had a wonderful time.
We also added goat showing this year for the first time and alot of the kids in our 4H group have them (not us though) We were there for support though!

Our fair here is so small that a one dollar bill will cover the entire area. Back home in Maine we had a fair in Fryburg and it was huge and we always went. The last night they have a huge fireworks display. I'd love to go back and go this fall but no possible way
I'm in the Midwest, too! I think for some reason they have the BEST county and state fairs. I love taking my kids to the fair. They're finally big enough to go on all the rides. While, they do that, I sit back and people watch. Love it. (And I love food.)
