If you were lost while out hiking .... with just enough supplies in your back pack for 2 days, do you think you know enough to stay alive and well for 5 days or more?
(also assuming that anyone else in your group had enough supplies for themselves for 2 days also)
I don't think I would. I would hope I was with my dh because he would know what to do. I'm sure we would be eating certain plants and dh would build a great shelter. My GS's the, "Boy Scouts" would be able to cope too.....So if I'm out camping I pray I'm with my guys.......LOL

That's the way to do it Happy make sure you hike with some one who has knowledge!
We hear a lot on how to survive in the dessert, how go gather water, when to travel and what things you can and can't do, but remember when the time arrives would be the hard part I think.
We also seem to hear about people being lost in the bush a lot so just curious.
I'd like to think I could but anything can happen!
I think it would have to depend on a few scenarios. First, who am I hiking with? Secondly, where am I hiking at?
Thirdly, did I tell anyone outside my hiking group where I "should" be and when I "should" be back by?
Fourthly, what did I pack (ID, first aid, cell phone / water-proof camera, possible weather related clothes, snacks, sugarless chewing gum, matches/lighter/flashlight, extra batteries, etc)?
Fifth, Did I / we agree at a "meeting" spot at a predestined time?
And lastly, Did I leave markers for what path I took, so I could get back (unless I slipped off the path)?
If I prepared for all of the above, I probably could make it for a few days longer then my scheduled hike. Otherwise I think I would be screaming, crying, and praying that I do not attract hungry wild animals and/or a bad guy. After calming down, I would try to relax and mentally retrace my steps, in hopes of getting back to the general "meeting" place.

I think I do find if I planned my trip the way your suppose to. #1. Tell some one your plans when your leaving and coming back. Give them a copy of the trail and map. I always carry in my fannie pack the following except the water bottles these things.A whistle, Map & compass, food, candy, gum, pocket knife, firstaid kit, rain poncho, extra pair of socks, then rope, a medince bottle with fish line hook and small float, suntan lotion, bug off, and chapstick cellphone (but most time they don't do good in the mountians). The key to getting lost is to stay calm and stay put. If you told someone were your going they come serch. Specially tel your childern this. It hard to serch a moving target. Blow your whistle 3 straight times when you think someone near so you be heard. Take your string and poncho make shelter if need to. Always have a Buddy

If you do all those things for a 2 day hike wherever and who ever you usually hike with sounds like you'd be fine.
I'm also going on, no snake or spider bites and no accidents to people happen.
Could you find water if you'd run out, could you start your own fire, do you know how to make a shelter or find at least a little food to supplement what you had with you, basics really.
I think I would make it for 2 days if I was lost. So would everyone in our family. We are big campers. Yes we have a camper but we do alot of backpacking and tent camping trips also. The only problem I might have is I am not a great knot tire. My dh can tie a knot for everything. That is 1 think as a gs I learned but never used enough to remember. Dh and both boys were Eagle Scouts and do excellent in the woods. Of course dh and ds #1 are military(dh is retired) so they both have alot of experience with this.
In my fannie pack I have a lighter so yes I can build a fire. I would hike one way then retun to camp site to get to know the area and serch water. Makeing a map of my area. If it rains I could collet the water with the rain poncho and yes I could make a shelter.
As for food I have a fish line and hook in my fannie pack. So it i am neat a creek or strem I can try catch fish. Thier always frog legs and chickweed, day lily tubers, in spring fiddle heads, plaitian, lamb quarters, berries.
