Power Outages

How do you keep your kids entertained if there is a power outage?

We have on hand-
puzzles, scrapbooking supplies, and board games.

We find all the candles and light up the dining table, play cards, board games or puzzel books, kinda nice really!

Power Outage

To me, there is nothing cooler than "needing" to use candles! I have several candle sconces around the house, and I can hardly wait for an excuse to use them. So, if the power ever goes out, it's fun to pretend like you're from another era.

If you have enough light to read by comfortably, try getting out one of the Little House books and float away to distant times with Laura and her family. Or choose another book like Harry Potter or something Tolkein-esque.

I have a couple of those new LED flashlights and I know exactly where they are, so I make sure everyone is equipped with one of these for restroom breaks, etc.

When the lights come back on, don't despair. Just flip the switches to the off positions and continue to enjoy this time with your kids. They're only little once, so make the most of it!

I make smores...when the power goes out. We roast mashmellows over the candle flame and add the graham crackers and chocolate.....Yummy treat. My DS loves when the power goes out, cause this is the only time I make them.

Make shadow puppets on the wall by candle light. You can act out one of your favorite movies or create your own.

Try singing songs, playing charades, telling ghost stories, coloring contests.

I love a good power-outage, except for when it is close to or below freezing temperatures outside, then it can be a bit daunting just trying to think of fun ways to stay warm (other than sleeping by the fireplace, fully dressed, piled under all the blankets, and two cats).... I use to have dozens of candles and candle holders (before we moved to AZ in May 2011), and our B-B-Q, just for this occasion. I use to pretend that we were camping out. We had our trusty BBQ to make meals with and heat water / soups...sometimes we would roast marshmallows over the grills if it was warm enough outside to do so, otherwise the fireplace was great for roasting mellows/ dogs/ popcorn. If the little ones came were visiting we would built a fort / tent of blankets and furniture and imagine we were in someplace else exploring the deep jungles of Africa, or rain-forests in the Olympic mountains. If we were on a septic tank - coffee cans in the backyard /garage were used like out houses, but if we were on city sewage it was business as usual. Sometimes we would play board/card games, but mostly things that would keep our minds and bodies active until it was late enough to sleep properly.
