I am tolerating the heat better this year now that I don't have AC at home. I was able to sit outside at a baseball game in 85F this year without a problem when last year at 78F I was sweltering.

I keep a mop cloth close by to catch the drips off my chin. Even my dds have begun to perspire like that.

Thanks for the cooling tips ladies!

This summer is excruciating for me. I moved from West Texas and New Mexico where we usually have ZERO or little humidity. We have hot dry heat and run the a/c 12 months out of the year. I moved to OK where I have encountered blizzards and now super humidity. I am not used to that. In TX and NM, I prided myself on being able to endure the heat that nobody else could because I am hot natured. I am not longer hot natured. I have never had sweat drip down all parts of my body. I find it difficult to breath in temps that were no where near as high as I am used to.

My question is has anyone heard of a product that reduces humidity in the home? I forgot the name, but it is a product that you sit out and it somehow reduces humidity. If you've heard of it, please tell me whether or not you think it works and if it does, how well. Also, are de-humidifiers worth the costs?

dehumidifiers work well - an AC is simply a dehumidifier and cooler unit that vents it's engine heat to the outdoors - with a dehumidifier you will have the heat that the unit generates
\
in a basement which is cool typically, you will not need to be concerned about the heat from a dehumidifier

keeping windows closed in rooms with a dehumidifier helps but then remember the heat from the unit

but believe me, I'll take dry heat over wet heat any time

welcome to the dripping bodies club DeBora!

Yeah DeBora, Ellen explained it perfect! If you want the humidity out of your living quarters just run an ac because the dehumidifer will defintely heat up the place even more even though it removes the moisture. One of my sons learned that the hard way. They thought using 3 dehumidifers would be less costly than running their ac, but they soon found out they burned up with the heat from them! The dehumidifers are great for a basement; that is where we use ours, 3000 sq ft and it runs most of the summer down there, but the temperature down there stays about 55 degrees.

Like Blondie I am here in Charleston SC...I have been here since 1986 from upstate NY...growing up we had the fans on the windows...Here the humidity hit me faster than the heat...and like another mentioned I run sinus problems with the air conditioner...I try to keep the newest air conditioner on low with a power saver...problem last week with the weather is we were in a heat index of 115...had to turn the conditioner up...we do have duct work, but not the money to put an outside unit in...so a window unit is all we have plus fans...1 in the livingroom, bedroom, and my daughters room...But here is an old way to keep cool...place a large bowl or pot in front of fan and let the fan blow...A lot of older people here in Charleston are given just fans, a lot will spend time in front of the fan, until later at night when they sit out on the porch...
