I have 4 children so I always try to think of a container that will have an after life. For instance, one year I wanted to put 2 foot planters on my deck. That was what I purchased for their container and gave them gardening gloves, seeds, hand tools, those jiffy starters, etc.
Another year we needed book storage so I purchase wooden crates that can stack. I stained each one, then stenciled each with their names, then varnished. I used crinkled newspaper funnies as the "grass" and gave book mark craft kit, a book, etc.
Another year it was those white pedistal flower planters to put at the end of the drive, another was baskets that would look just as lovely regifted at christmas time to neighbors and I filled those with picnic type items for the kids, another year harvest baskets that we regifted at Thanksgiving with pickles, jellies, potatoes, canned veggies, homemade wine and straw flowers to our neighbors.
It's all about thinking of another life for the container.
