| My oldest is on a special prescription diet. The canned type is so nasty that most vets end up having to give the dog surgery to remove the bladder stones since they refuse to eat the special diet.
I played around with recipes for almost 2 months before perfecting my recipe for the bladder stone diet, but here is what I do:
2 boxes of brown rice, cooked according to directions.
6-8 sweet potatoes, cooked 1 boiled egg for every 2 cups of the above, finely diced Brewer's Yeast
1 jar of Better than Bouillon Beef base
2 small bottles of flax seed oil
I mix the rice and sweet potatoes together thoroughly. Then, I take about half that mixture as it makes quite a bit and put in a mixing bowl. I measure it as I put in the bowl so that I have 2 cup increments. For every 2 cups, I add 1 finely diced boiled egg. Add half the beef base. Mix all 4 ingredients thoroughly. Sprinkle in about a 1/3 a can of brewer's yeast and 1 bottle of flax seed oil. Make sure you shake the oil well as the good stuff is always at the bottom. With your hands, mix the rest together until a new color and shape forms and all ingredients are incorporated. Spoon into sandwich bags to freeze. Repeat with the second half. This should make at least a month's worth of dog food.
If your dog isn't on a special diet, check with your vet. Most vets carry a recipe sheet given to them by dog food companies. This diet is limit on proteins, which healthy dogs should not be.
I also give my dog a vitamin supplement in addition to the dog food to make sure he is getting his nutrition. He has been on this for almost 3 years now. |
