it has a couple of names, depending where you live. i know them as petit fore' servers. they are usually used at buffets or teas to serve small items like nuts, candies, small sandwiches, etc. depending on the size of the plates. aside from food items, you could put silk flowers in it, small ball ornaments. you could put potpourri in the bowl on the top, though i would line the bowl first so any oils wouldn't discolor it.

Yes, I know what you are describing, I have one as well that was my mom's and her mom's before . Kind of a family heir loom. I don't know what the correct name for it is. I have always refered to it as an hor derve server.
I use it all the time...Deveiled eggs, fruits, veggies, candy, cakes, any type of food.
I have also stacked it with flowers both dried and silk and with fruit that is beaded. The beaded fruit looks so nice on the middle of the dining table at holiday time. What about small pumpkins and small gourds at this time of year. I am sure the thoughts are endless. In the winter I have also stacked make believe snow balls on it.

Hi there
I have one of those lovely plate type holders. We sort of inherited it of my DH Nana, she called it a cake plate. She said she put cucumber sandwiches and little cakes on it when the visitors came. I don't use mine except to put occasional decorations on as it is quite old. It has antiquey type flowers painted on it. It stays on my old wall unit/dresser with all my other collectables, my Grandmas tea set coffe pot etc.
The handle and the pieces in between unscrew for washing and cleaning.
Flea markets and garage sales are great for finding odd things my favourite is a crystal vase that has a separate insert with holes in it to hold the flowers in order.

Tiered Plate Stand

I love those tiered plates. I have one with just 2 layers. They look lovely with anything served on them or just used for decoration. Try serving all of your next morning or afternoon tea on the one server. It will look a treat!
At Christmas you can decorate it with pine cones or baubles - it would look lovely.
Make the most of your find.

Bilby - the insert with the holes to hold the flower stems is called a frog

I've known them as a petit fore` server. An idea is to put a silk ( if you don't want to use real ) arangement in the top ( like ivy ).
Have extra fabric napkins folded and laying on the bottom with extra knives or tea spoons on the second plate. This is great with a sideboard or where you would have the food for buffet style ...

I have several of these and use them in a variety of ways... stands that have a bowl on top are usually reserved for "dip". Your can put fruit on the plates with a whipped cream dip or vegetables on the plates with an onion dip, etc. I primarily use mind for dessert tables at potlucks and fundraisers to show off fancy desserts and provide more room on the table for other stuff.
