Hi Nancy,
The southwest caught My EYE,
We lived in CA (17 years) and we decorate in South west style.

But when I got to this post also noticed we live in the same area. I live in North Huntingdon near Greensburg.

Small world this cyer space.

I like to use light tera cotta color or light yellow gold. color and I accent with turquoise. I have chili peppers in my kitchen and . My game room is also dark Don't know what to do with it yet.( I would like to paine my dark paneling) maybe a white and sponge on some color Mottelled.(sp)

Any earth colors. Warm colors yellow ,orange, in all shades.

Not much help.

santa fe

dawn, thanks so much for you ideas on paint color. we went to dinner last nite at Don Pablos and i was checing out their walls and color and had some ideas going on in my head (look out)!!!!! lol several years ago my husband built a shed for his boss to look like their house (a swiss chalet) and he used something called "hardy plank". it has rough kind of uneven look to it and comes in an off white color so i'm thinking of looking into that to put over the paneling and then paint it. who knows, i'm in no hurry right now, then again i really hate that gameroom!!!

welcome to the area hope you like it with the season changes and all. i am 10 mins north of downtown in shaler township and have always lived in the area.

thanks again
nancy

Maybe you could do a soft terra cotta color or a sandstone color and texturize the walls to look like stucco. I grew up in the SW and I remember that stucco was very big!

If you’re going to paint directly on the paneling, make sure you use a good primer! In my dark, dreary basement, I used something called XIM (Sherwin Williams might carry it). It smelled terrible but since I was using white paint, I wanted extra good coverage (didn’t want knot holes in wood still showing after two coats!). Don’t forget to give the paneling a good scrubbing before hand. Suggest the lightest SW inspired color you can find – or even a soft off-white and then trim edging and baseboards in a more vibrant SW color. It’s amazing what a coat of paint can do to a dreary paneled room! SW theme sounds fun!

Hi,

Happy Painting!

I would rather not paint over paneling but it may give a nice texture with the different slats.

Living in CA ~ I would use light/pale pastels. They all really look very nice together. Have fun.

Maybe you can post a before and after shot!!!

thanks everyone for all your ideas!! this week end i'm going to look into the "hardy plank" stuff and see how much it would cost and if it's to much right now maybe i'll just paint. i usually don't work in the summer, but this year i am just for this month and then i start a new job come sept. when school starts. i usually do big projects like this in the summer when i'm off and i would like to have something done for christmas!?!?!?! thanks again to everybody!
HAPPY 4th

Pinkie Winky Dark Game Room

I know there are outdoor paints available that have sand in them. It might be easier to use this paint rather than stucco paint on your panelling. another idea would be to crackle the bottom 42" of the wall, using a lighter or brighter color on top of a dark color, or maybe even just over the panelling itself. To do this, simply apply a coat of carpenters wood glue over the base color ot panelling, let it dry well, and then paint with a golden color. Use only one coat over the dark color and you will begin to see the crackling effect as the paint starts to dry. Make sure you treat the panelling first by rubbing the wall down with vinegar or alcohol. You can put up a chain rail, and crackle your trim using the opposite effect, dark over light. and don't forget to paint the upper portion of your wall using a regular or a crackle finish in the same or a complimenting color. I would maybe then stencil a variety of cactus plants, or a southwest motif above the chair rail. Rough up the chair rail a bit with the sandpaper too, and then you can make a "window" or two for your room. Go to your home center and buy a window frame, or perhaps there is one lying around in the garage or basement. Use mirror squares or you may need bigger depending on the size of the openings you desire. Paint your frame and use sanpaper to rough up the surface a bit. You can even add a flower box to the inside base of the window. Fill it with nice looking artificial cactus and some sand. For a curtain you can buy a valance, or even make one using some fabric to match, and don't forget to buy some nice wrought iron window hardware. Place it on a wall where it will reflect something nice, maybe even across from a light source to reflect the light and create a nice effect in the room.. A jute rug, or a handpainted rug cloth if you are creative, with a nice native american border, or make it look like a blamket. And pillows, lots of pillows in terra cotta, clay jade green, berry, rust, and golden yellow Whatever you decide to do though, have lots of fun and be creative. Do you have a fireplace?
