Ideas on where/how to Laminating Fabric?

I would like to recover my kitchen chairs with fabric, but wanted to laminate the fabric first. I've used the fabric protector from Calico Corners and it works great, but with 2 kids, the covers are looking faded over the years.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated also!

THANKS

You might try clear Con*tact paper, but I'm not sure if it'd work. It's great for covering paperback books and laminating paper, but not sure if it'd work on fabric.

Worth a try, I guess.

I remember hearing Carol Duvall, a couple of years ago, talking about using something that one uses for sliding glass windows in the winter to keep the heating more efficient. She uses it for laminating in crafts and it comes in big rolls from a home improvement store. She says it's much cheaper. I'll see if she has anything on her website about it....if she has a website. I'll get back to ya.

Ok, I looked around on the net but can't find anything solid about a cheap brand or which store to shop. I know that 3M makes several window laminate products ranging from sun protection (to keep floor, etc from damage of sun coming through windows) to security..a very tough vinyl laminate that stops burglars (and even some stuff that is supposed to stop bombs lol). I would think it would be worth checking out a Lowe's or HomeDepot type place to see if they have a similar material. I remember Carol mentioning that if you buy it in the "off season" it is very cheap for the amount that you get. She either had large sheets or rolls of it and cut it down to the size she needed for crafts. I would think this would be really handy in doing a project with furniture. Sorry I can't give you anything conclusive. I'll keep my eyes open, though.

When my kids were small I used vinyl tablecloths to cover my chairs. There are many colors and designs, and they wipe right off with a wet cloth. I bought several of the same design to cover my 6 chairs, however I know they sell the same stuff on rolls at fabric stores. It's kinda the same thing as doing that to fabric. Hope this helps.

Hi, wanted to let you know: Jo Ann Fabrics has an iron-on vinyl theat is sold by the yard.

If I rmember, it's not really inexpensive, but if you get on their mialing list you get a coupon for 50% off any single cut of fabric.

I purchased some to make placemats, but haven't tried it yet.

I saw a sewing show a few years back. Nancy's Sewing maybe?
Her directions were for making a pretty raincoat.

You can pick your own fabric and I bought the clear vinyl from a hardware store off a roll. It comes with a paper backing. You take the paper backing off, place the fabric on the vinyl, place the backing paper back on top of the fabric and they will bond. I didn't leave it on long enough at first and some spots have separated.

I used it for recovering my kitchen chairs, you can also buy the vinyl fabric which is what I am using this time. It's a black vinly with a cotton back.

Hope this helps
KC

Joann's has some iron-on vinyl. It works pretty good. I have made bibs with it (so the liquid won't go through to the clothes).

I would think that it would work fine.

EEEEPs! I left off of my last post that you have to iron it too to make it bond. So sorry if this caused any confusion.

That bib idea sounds wonderful. Could make some lovely matching sets that way. I'm gonna save that idea for when the grandchildren start coming LOL.
