Post country kitchen

I'm looking for country kitchen cupboard ideas. I have pine colored cupboards which we will be replacing within the next year or so. For now, I'm just experimenting. I would like to leave the top cupboards pine, and paint the bottoms. I'm looking for techniques I could possibly use. Navy and blues and off whites are my poisons, and I love the rooster motif. I have a lot of rooster "stuff"

Any ideas?? TIA

After painting, or even before, how about finding some cute rooster fabric and attach it to the doors? Then you could put chicken wire over the fabric. It would fit with the "rooster" stuff, and is most definitely "country"!

I have a friend that is very artistic and can paint just about anything. She made her kitchen/dining room into a barnyard--complete with a horse sticking its head over the fence in the dining room lol! It's one big mural. She painted chickens on her cupboards(lower) and put the wire over them--that's where I got the idea.

Rooster kitchen

Well, it must be true that great minds think alike. I was "seeing" in my mind's eye exactly what has already been suggested. Except my idea was to actually take down the cabinet doores, cut a large rectangle shap out of the door, attach a rooster fabric to the inside (either cafe curtain rods or stape with a stape gun?) Then, on the ourside of the door, cover the hole with chicken wire (You could even spray paint it to match your colors) and cover the edges with a decorative wood moulding (There's one made to cover the edges of screening on screen doors.)

You could even paint the mouding; distress it, crackle it, pickle it.

Roosters Huh?!

Okay...both of you two pulled that one out of my head, as I have done a friend's kitchen for her in a similar manner, but here is MY twist!
Okay...don't be scared, but yes, you gotta get rid of the center panel of the cabinet doors and this part is too easy to complete that it was scarrrry
Get you some Chicken Wire and your staple gun and staple it so that it is 1 to 1.5 inches larger then the opening! NOW>>>If you don't have any STASH>>>then you will have to go to Wal Mart and.....
Buy some material, 1/4" heat-n-bond, 1/2" velcro (double stick)and 1/2"elastic...and SOLID colored cotton material!
1.Cut the pieces of fabric the SAME length as the Door... Not the Opening, The Actual Door! Then double the width of the Opening of the Door.
2. Fold it down 1 inch from the top...stick with the heat-n-bond...do the same for the bottom.
3. Cut the elastic the 2 inches larger then the opening of the door and run the elastic through the Top and Bottom seams and stitch the elastic to the ends to hold or if you can't sew...put little saftey pins on the side that faces the Door and just secure them like that!
4. Measure material to the inside of the door and mark where the velcro needs to be placed, and get it stuck up there and you are done! Don't forget to stick half of it on the material!
If you decide NOT to eventually replace the cabinets, you can always Paint and Destress them or just Paint them, but if there is ANY chance that you are going to be replacing them in the next year...don't bother messin with em...that light color would go nice with a Rooster Red color of material. And you CAN buy ya some Rooster-Rub Ons...probably at Wal Mart or Michaels or even Hobby Lobby Pretty cheap and put 1...don't go crazy- on the top OR bottom of the front of the door and do a checker board thing around the other 3 sides like I did...subtle but COOL!
Ok...have fun and Enjoy this...it is suppose to be Fun and Relaxing...not a chore!! Michele from the sunny South

Country isn't my "look" and roosters even less so, but I did do my son's nursery in rocking horses 15 years ago, so I've been there. I stenciled a border in his bedroom colors to match a crib set that I'd made from fabric with stencil-look rocking horses.

What I suggest is that you stick "rooster" and "stencil" into your browser. I just did and there was a ton of stuff, lots of freebies!
Here are some of them:

5. Modern Birds Stencil Designs

What I would do would be to stencil roosters as a border, see if you can find some coordinating fabric to make curtains or valances and perhaps a tablecloth or runners. A sisal rug could be stencilled to match. What I envision is a clock made from a skillet, stencilled with a rooster in your country-blues, with the clock works attached over it. Have you seen those clock kits? You could make it yourself or you could find an existing skillet clock and paint it. I put rooster and clock into my browser and turned up...

Kitchen Makeover - Rooster Motif

Dear Tarq and other friends,

Well, I can't believe the great ideas!! I was thinking of painting the cabinets with a dark blue or red and then rubbing a cloth thru the paint to make them look old, but I like the chicken wire idea even better! There are several advantages to this look: the chicken wire is cheap; stencils are either free or cheap (on the net they're free); and you may not even have to replace the cabinets. I'd try to keep what was there, in my opinion, if the wood is solid pine (no particleboard stuff) and if they could be reinforced and/or braced I'd do that first. Also, changing (or painting) the door knobs (if you have door knobs) is a fun idea. You can get some plain black antique-looking ones fairly cheap at Wal-Mart or a similar type store (or even a building warehouse type of place if you have one nearby). The knobs would go with almost anything. Of course, cute rooster ones would be great, but I'm sure that would get expensive. However, maybe you could get a few at a time if you found some you just had to have. I do that with household staple items such as towels -- I call it "towel of the month club!" (This way we don't get hit with having to buy six bathtowels all at once...ouch!)

Do let all of us know what you decide to do. By the way, if you lived close I would love to help! I love decorating and organizing and am thinking of starting my own home-based business doing that. I love using what people already have and finding new uses for it, as well as scouring thrift stores and yard sales for unusual items.

Again, do let us know what you end up doing, and good luck!

Blessings,

Thank you so much !!!

WOW, Ladies!!!!

I love all your ideas - too bad I only have ONE kitchen, lol!!!

I'm still not quite sure what I'm gonna do, but I'll be sure to let you know. I usually try and take photos of the before and afters, and I'll post them.

Thanks for the offer of help. I'd certainly take you up on that if you lived closer - I live in Newfoundland, Canada!!

I'm off to check out that stencil site, and thanks so much for your hard work of searching the internet for me. I really appreciate it!!

I have loads of rooster items (figurines, windmill, plates, watering can, a chalkboard - which I did myself with paint, and a small simple rooster stencil, etc)

I'll keep in touch!! Thanks again.

Cathy

Country Kitchen

Well, Cathy, I am up for a vacation from Oklahoma, but Newfoundland!!! Well, I do have lots of relatives in Maine...

Seriously, you're very welcome, and do let all of us know what you decide to do to your kitchen. I don't know if you can post pictures on this website or thread, but that would be fun, I think!

I hope you are able to get what you need cheaply or use things you already have, and many blessings as you work!

Enjoy!!

Looks like I am going to be some decorating myself in the next few weeks as we are closing this week on our new house...good by Apartment!! Yeee Haaa
My current kitchen is small and I did it in white walls and used my curtains and chair seats...etc for color (red and white checkers) and my thing is Apples, flowers and birdhouses...which are what i love to build and paint myself! I think I am going to stick with the birdhouses and flowers, but who knows what else I will come up with!
I am sooo in love with my new kitchen...it is HUGE and since I am Italiana and my husband is Tex-Mex, we ALL live in my kitchen! I even got lucky with this place and it has a dining room AND a nice size Breakfast room...so anyone who has any ideas that go with my Birdhouse/Flower theme, let me know...OK?!
Talk to ya'll soon...take care and have some FUN!!!
