Would love to learn to quilt and sew

Hi there,

I would love to learn to quilt and sew.....both arts I think are getting lost in so many folks busy lives.
I get so frustrated though because I have asked people to teach me to sew..and they say," well go get the material, and supplies...."
I don't know how to read a pattern so that overwhelms me.

For quilting, must you have a sewing machine and/ or quilting rack?
I want to use scrab fabrics to make a first quilt. Even a knotted quilt, which is what alot of "plain" women make around here.

I read the one post suggesting finding local quilting groups and I think I am going to look into that.

What are basic things I need to get started?

Memin bought me a sewing machine awhile back.
Maggy and I tried to sew on it.. and jammed the machine. A lady from church who sews said that because the machine is brand new.. there may just be thread caught or be a bobbin problem SIGH... I need to learn to sew
I think in the winter I will really work on sewing and such

Don't feel too bad... I have 2 sewing machines and have jammed both. Dh fixed it once but I just don't have the patience or time to play with it. I guess I'm lazy, I just sew everything by hand. I love the blue jean blanket and am saving all my scraps from my blue jean purses to cut into smaller squares and hopefully this winter will start sewing them together. I also have a quilting rack, still in it's box but I think I like the idea of lap sewing better than having a big frame set up and away from my family room but it's there if I decide to use it.
