I make spare toilet tissue holders with coffee cans. They are very simple to make. If you need instructions just let me know.

I use old coffee cans for potting plants, for storing items and also for putting a gift or gifts in, in place of wrapping paper, just attach a bow to it and your gift is ready to go. You could even pop microwave popcorn and give it in the tin to some, in the paper bag or out of the paper bag. Also coffee cans/tins make great snack holders or cookie canisters, as you can decorate them to match any room with just a little paper and such. Hope I give you ideas if you were still looking for ideas to use coffee cans.
