Wind Chimes

Wind Chime

This homemade wind chime will alert you to a breeze with a gentle tinkle.

Materials
• Scissors
• Clear plastic lids
• X-Acto knife
• Hole punch
• Fishing line
• Stick or dowel
• Jingle bells

Step 1:
Cut the rims off the plastic lids, then help your children cut out seven (or as many as you like) leaf shapes from the clear plastic. If you want, you can create "veins" on the leaves by lightly scoring each one with an X-Acto blade.

Step 2:
Punch a hole in the top and bottom of each leaf. Tie a 7- to 10-inch length of fishing line to the top of each leaf, then hang the leaves, evenly spaced, from the stick or dowel.

Step 3:
Using short lengths of fishing line, hang a jingle bell from the bottom of each leaf.

Step 4:
To make a hanger, tie the ends of a 6- to 8-inch piece of fishing line to each end of the stick

Flowerpot Chime

Give spring's warm breezes a unique voice with this earthy wind chime.

Materials
• 5 1/4-inch-diameter plastic flowerpot saucer
• Five 1 1/2-inch-diameter clay pots
• Clear acrylic finish
• Pushpin
• Acrylic paint
• Scissors
• String
• Hole punch
• Soda bottle
• Craft knife
• Small bells
• Buttons

Step 1:
Paint the saucer and pots. When the paint dries, add a coat of clear acrylic finish. Let it dry.

Step 2:
Using a pushpin, make a hole in the center of the plastic saucer and at four equidistant spots around the side of the saucer. Widen the holes with scissors or a compass point if needed (a parent's job).

Step 3:
Cut five leaf shapes out of the soda bottle (a parent's job).

Step 4:
Cut four 1 1/2-foot lengths of string.

Step 5:
To make each chime, punch a hole in the end of a plastic leaf and tie it onto the end of the string. Next, slip on the bell, tie a knot about 3/4 inch above the bell, thread on a button and then a pot (upside down).

Step 6:
Thread the end of the string out through one of the side holes in the saucer (thread from the inside and make sure the saucer's upside down). To fasten in place, run the string up through one hole in a button and then down through another hole and knot tightly.

These are Great! I love wind chimes! Thanks for sharing!

My daughter and I also made a butterfly windchime! We took several different sizes of cans.....we used a big baked bean can, then a spagetti sauce can, a green bean can and then a small friut cup can. I had my husband drill small holes in the bottoms.( to tie them all together after painting) They all need to fit inside the next biggest one. We painted each one a different color....we used pink, purple, blue and yellow. (Spring colors) On the biggest can we used a sharpie to draw a face then we sprayed all of the cans with a sealer and used a strong string to tie them together putting knots on the appropriate places to allow each can to hang below the other one. We made wings for it too by hot glueing craft foam on the back of it and we hung it outside! I hope this makes sense...I feel like I was rambling! Have a great day!~Pam.

We made some easy ones during summer reading program.

Materials:
large cottage cheese or yogurt container
6 frozen juice lids
markers or tempera paints
fishing line
hole punch

Decorate the container and the lids

punch 6 holes around the bottom of the inverted container.
Punch hole in the juice lid. Using fishing line, tie the lids to the container.

Finally, poke a hole through the center of the bottom of the container to attatch a string to hang.
