Tole painting

I would love to learn more about tole painting. I paint crafts, but just do what I have taught myself. I don't know any of the proper techniques or what the correct brushes are to use.

Would love to hear from anyone else who enjoys this!

painting ideas

I work full time and I paint crafts in my spare time and do a few craft shows a year.
I am always looking for new trends and try to paint what people are looking for.
There are alot of free ideas and patterns on the net.
A good place to start looking at is
www.busybrushes.com.
or www.decoart.com.

blushing Tole Painting

Hi Ladies!
I have attempted to learn tole painting on my own through reading books and copying directions. I have come to several conclusions-not the least of which is to drink less caffeine!. Tole painting is not as easy as it seems and is very hard to learn w/o hands on instruction. I have signed up for an April class at a craft store in my area. It is a small fee ($20) that will pay for itself in less wasted materials and frustration. I'll let you all know how it works out. Keep trying, you may be better at it than I am. Love from MN

3cmommy, if you don't mind me asking, where in MN are you from? I'm just south of the twin cities. I get all excited when I "meet" a fellow Minnesotan in cyber world!

Hi brayg!
I'm also always glad to meet a fellow Minnesotan on the web. We are in Andover-a northern suburb about a 35 min drive from the MNSP airport up 35W. You will enjoy this group, it has something for everyone with alot of good common sense people and topics. Glad to "meet" you, I'm sure I'll see you around the topic boards. Batten down the hatches, baby it's COLD out tonight!!!! Chilly in MN Tonight!

3cmommy and brayg, I am no longer in MN, but lived there with my husband for about a year and a half back in Aug. '97 to Mar. '99. We lived in Owatonna, MN, which is south of the Twin Cities. It sure IS cold in MN, although from what I heard, the 2 winters we were there were "mild" or at least had less snow than usual. We live in NY now where both my DH and I are originally from. Nice to "meet" you both!

Anyway, I guess this board is supposed to be about tole painting. I had one mini class about an hour long at the church I went to in MN (pastor's wife tole painted). I was relieved to see that you got to trace a basic pattern onto the wood instead of come up with all of it yourself! (At least that is how I learned there--don't know that it is always that way) I would like to take some more classes myself someday to learn more technique about brushes, strokes, shading, etc. All I have ever painted is a little pumpkin! LOL I have 3 children, 3 1/2 yo and under though, so it might be a while before I take the plunge!:p

I am always transfering a pattern before I paint. There are alot of free patterns you can find on the net.
Some people start with small items first, but always paint things that you like.
Good luck with your painting.

I know where Andover is...my parents have some friends that live there, actually.

I think I'm at about the halfway point between Andover and Owatonna, LOL! I'm in Jordan...a small town just south of Shakopee.

I actually came to this topic because my mother would like to learn tole painting. Thought I'd check it out and see what I could learn.

I thought I would share a few things I did today. I went to a thrift store and found three wooden things. I repainted them in different ways and paid less than $2.50 for all 3! I posted them in the Trash to Treasure thread here

Tole Painting

Tole painting is a great way to get into art. You only have to learn a few strokes (which you already know how to do with a pencil). We use the same strokes in all types of art but in different ways. Therefore, if you can make a C, and a U, you can paint a rose.

If you learn 12 or 13 strokes, you can paint just about anything with practice. Most people have more trouble mixing color than with using the brush. It does take practice.

Jackie Shaw has some excellent books and videos you can ckeck out at her website. One Stroke is excellent but it's more difficult than it looks unless you already know about strokework. If you can paint a beautiful cabbage rose with 2 strokes, think what you can so with 12.

It's exciting to read about so many new artist's on the rise. Go for it! I started with one brush, one bottle of paint, and 500 sheets of notebook paper. Lol, now I could open s store.
