For Christmas my son received home made soap that has matchbox cars in it. He LOVES this soap. He knows he has to use the soap to get to the car and it makes bath time much easier(he's 2 1/2)
I was just wondering if anyone knows how to make it? I would love to be able to make him more when he runs out of the soap he has.
I've made them using the melt and pour method. You buy a block of glycerin(craft store) and melt it, then pour it into whatever you're using as a mold. You can add scents/colors if you want to. To add toys(or flowers, etc) can be a bit tricky because they tend to float lol! Either use something a bit heavy, or weight the soaps down(I used wax paper with a somewhat heavy pot).
I'm sure there are other ways, but I hope this helps!
Check out this website -- there's all kinds of wonderful instructions including helpful hints for working with melt and pour soap. The owner, Trina, runs a great forum and publishes a very good electronic newsletter. They're great folks, really helpful and love soaping.
what a great idea! sure wished i would've heard of this when my son was younger. he hated to take a bath! i was always at him.
you can check out www.frugalshopper.com or www.makestuff.com. they should have soap making recipes. i've made liquid washing detergent off of frugal shopper and it's cheaper to make than buying it in the stores. i haven't bought store detergent since august 2002. and on fs, you can make face cream, bath oil, etc. i love it!
Ooh--two more new sites to check out lol!! Thanks a bunch, aarickasmom! I've checked out the snowdrift farm site--I like it, too.
IMO, with all this info available, there's no reason to say you can't live frugally. In my experience, it's not lack of money, it's just being lazy! Now I'm going to click on those links and see what I can find!
I go to the bargain/dollar stores and buy the cheap coloured glycerin soaps. My kids melt them in the microwave till they are a liquid. They then pour them into whatever mold that they can think of and add toys, beads, coins, etc... We have even used the inside trays from those advent calendars and made 1 time use soaps for camps. That way you have a fresh bar each time instead of one sandy, grity bar. Great evening craft for kids or a lasts minute presents for their friends .
I just started soapmaking as a "hobbie" (not that I have much time, but it can become addictive!) Soap can make a wonderful gift for just about anyone. Here are two websites that I'm sure will be very useful:
I have been doing this for about 5 years now. What I do is buy bars of glycerine (sp??) soap from Wal-Mart, melt in glass measuring cup in microwave and then pour into muffin tins. I have used the mini, regular and texas size. I use a toothpick to hold down the item until I can tell it will not "float away." My son's (5 years) only soap he will use is MOM'S. Cuz' she does it just right and with the ARMY GUYS. I have done it with bugs of all sorts, snakes, etc. At Wal-Mart I bought this container full of creatures and have been using it for boys. For girls I have put in ribbon roses, little "claw" hair clips, etc. (one of my neices loves Hot Wheels, so I did a boy one for her. Randall was all Mom girls do not play with cars.) I love doing it was the already scented and colored soap, because I can do it quickly before bed and it is ready when we get up for those last minute Kindergarten b-day parties.
