rims of jars

Hi, just saw where some of you were looking for ideas on finishing the rims of jars with lids on it. What about "frosting" them with etching cream? Just a light coat should do it.

Interesting, what is etching cream and where would you get that? I have never heard of it

etching cream

Hi Amanda! Etching cream is used on glass to "frost" pictures/designs. Any Micheals, Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklins, etc would carry it--probably around the "stained glass" stuff. It's in a jar (usually couple different sizes) and you just paint it on, let set, wash it off and off you go. I'd do it before painting the jar. It kind of roughens up the glass a little and might be neat to use it around a painted area too--might open up to all sorts of ideas!! Cyndi (pengiemom)

Thanks pengiemom! Does this stuff stay on after repeated unscrewing and screwing on of the lid? That's my biggest problem with paint. Eventually the paint wears off, which is why I don't usually include a lid. Thanks!

etching jar lids

I think it should stay on--it actually "roughens up" the glass, so it should. The only thing might be that after repeated opening/closing it might start smoothing out, but will still leave you a frosted look. And I think that would only happen on the raised parts. You might try using on the inside of the rim--you wash off the actual "chemical" so even if you put candies, etc in the jar you don't have to worry about it flaking off or getting a paint odor in the jar like you would with paint.
