Bead Curtains
I'm planning to make a bead curtain for my daughter's closet door. I've never done this before but intend to put brackets over the door to hold a wooden dowel. Then I'll string beads and loop them over the dowel at the top. Any advice or suggestions from any of you pros out there?

this is wonderful my boyfriend wants a bead curtain i never thought of making one!!!!!!be a great christmas gift for him but i never really workded with beads much have no clue where to start id love a pattern or instructions too!!!! thanks ahead to any replys!!! and thank you for the idea!!! he is one of those i had no clue what to get this would be great!!!!!
A friend of my daughter's made a bead curtain. She interspersed paper beads, which she made, with plastic beads on 6 foot strands, which were tacked to a 1x1 piece of wood, which they nailed above a door. Cute!
I too am gearing up to make a beaded curtain. I have been looking in different leaflets that have beaded items already in them. You could go from there and make several 4-5" curtains or the regular stings of beads. My daughter is into the wild animal motif so I thought I'd go from there. GO WILD!!

As far as instructions are concerned, it looks fairly easy.
All you need is a dowel the widge of your door, some brackets to hang it on, some crafter's lace and the beads of your choice. Make a loop at one end of the lace (which is just plastic yarn or string) so that you can hang it from the dowell, the lace should be the length of your door. Then string the beads on the lace. Make as many beaded laces as you need to fill up the dowell, loop them over the dowell, hang from the braces and you're done!
You can paint your dowell and the braces if you like. You can also make a cloth tie-back to hold the curtain open with a little hook at the side of the door. Or.... make a beaded tie-back? Use your imagination! And, above all.... Have fun!!! ;-)

What size beads is everyone using? I just bought some plastic pony beads and it would seem that to do just like 10 strands would take a TON of beads. I saw some of the "vintage" beaded curtains in the Oriental Trading company catalog for like $10. They used the bigger (quarter) size beads mixed with some others. I have no idea where to get those kinds of beads. I also had kind of a hare-brained idea. I wanted to drill holes in those pretty marble/rocks that are used for fish or pots. They are disc shaped and would be beautiful with the light shining through. I bought a glass cutting bit for my drill. Wish me luck! I haven't tried it yet, but plan to tonight. Keep up the great ideas! Katie

I'm using the regular sized beads and you're right it takes tons. I wanted to use the bigger ones but they're super expensive. Let me know how the drilling goes. Maybe I'll try that.
