Happy face Memory/T-shirt Quilt Question

Let me start by saying I am not crafty at all!! Is it possible to make a quilt (doesn't need to be bed-size, just something I can curl up with on the couch) out of golf-shirts? My dad passed away just over a year ago and I want to have a memory quilt made using some of his old shirts. It doesn't need to have a specific pattern or be anything fancy, its more of the memory/comfort that I'm looking for. Where would I go to find someone who could make this for me? Any idea's/suggestions would be a big help.

Gina, this is such a cool idea. I am not a crafty person at all, so when I do crafts, they are easy. lol Have you thought about asking the staff at the craft or fabric store if they know someone who could use your old sentimental tees to make you a throw quilt? They usually know people like that.

I asked at one local quilt shop and the women there weren't helpful at all. I got a little discouraged after that, but I will ask at the local Joann's fabric store.

I found a couple of sites online that make them, but I was hoping for something with a more "personal" touch.

I have seen this done--a memory quilt made from old team t-shirts, for an athlete going away to college. It was a simple, tied quilt with large blocks cut from the fronts of the shirts. I understand that the maker used a glass template for the blocks, so as to be able to position the team design the most attractive way in the center of the block.

If you are not a sewer, this may not mean a lot to you...but if you find someone to make it for you, these suggestions might.

I would offer to make it, but with a full-time job and a chronically ill child, this is not the best time for me to take on a big project.

I'm hoping to get to the fabric store this week. I hope I can find someone to make it, I'd attempt it myself, but I am NOT crafty and I think it would end up being stressful for me!

I do not know if I will be of any help or not. My daughter in law has made several T shirt quilts. She makes them for throws and for her kids to use at track meets etc. She cuts the fronts where the designs are in as big a square as she can t include the pattern. Then sews them together with a serger (Mine) she does not use an iron on backing as some do The backing is generally flannet and a very thin batting. She has bound some of them and then ties them at the corners of the squares and sometimes in the middle of each square if they are quite large. They are very nice when she gets done. She has also cut the backs and alternated the design block with a plain one to give it some contrast. Hope this helps. Marian in North Dakota

Janet, Your quilt is wonderful. There are a lot of memories in it as I can see by the blocks. I was impressed by the 4-H block. I was a 4-H leader for 17 years so it has a spot in in my heart. Good Job. Marian in North Dakota
