Does anyone know how I can make pinatas for Cinco de Mayo without using the usual balloon and paper mache?
I have to make 6 for Ben's school and I've looked and can't find out how to do it...there's a party place that makes them cylindrical using maybe cardboard and use the cake plates or tablecloths to decorate but they won't tell me how to do it or give me a discount or donation

Hi Nancy,
I have seen them done using cardboard (whatever shape you like). The card about the thickness of a cereal packet. Cover in gift wrapping paper and then decorate with crepe paper 'fringes' and streamers. These are NOT as sturdy as the traditional ones, so I don't know how you would go with that. Usually I have used them with younger children.

Nancy if you use sheets of the cardboard, you attach the top and bottom with packing tape (masking tape isn't strong enough). Thinking about it last night, you could use two sheets of cardboard making it double thickness, giving more strength to it! Also using a lighter weight whacker would mean more kids got a chance!
You can create any shape that te cardboard lends itself to. What is the theme? (I don't know anything about Cinqo de Mayo!)

Traditionally in Mexico families use cardboard boxes. Heavy boxes though so the kids can't easily break it.
We also use clay pots, but if you are making these for school I'm not sure how feasible that would be with broken pottery and safety issues!

PS: a side note...
Cinco de Mayo is the battle of Pueblo. Alot of folks think that this is Mexican Independance Day..
Pueblo is a particular part of Mexico.
September 15th is "El dia del Grito" where the president "yells" and the 16th is actually Independence Day.

Place a clothes hanger bent and added at the top inside of the bag then fill and wrap around the top of the bag to seal it shut. Leave the hanger part out of the top when sealing shut. That way you will have something to tie the rope to that is going to hang it in the air.
Instead of using candy. We use to use this recipe when I had my kids in the Headstart program. This is a Mexican recipe.
Confetti Popcorn
Popcorn that has been popped, about six quarts popped. Set aside in a large deep kettle.
Mix the following in a 2 quart pan to cook;
2 Cups white sugar
1/2 Cup of water
2 Tablespoons of Butter
Food coloring
Cook and stir with a wooden spoon, until softball stage; about 4 minutes. Remove from heat add food coloring. Stir really good and pour over popcorn that was set aside and stir with the wooden spoon until all popcorn is well coated.
Make 4 batches and use a different color each time then mix all batches together after it has cooled.
We use to add a few pieces of candy corn to about !/2 cup of candied popcorn in a sandwich bag and tie off the top of bag with yarn.
This way the pinata is a lighter weight.
We always made one bag for each child. That way no one was disappointed and they each had their own bag.
