Kitchen Crafts

No-Cook Playdough
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon alum
food coloring
1/2 cup water

Mix first four ingredients. Add food coloring to the water. Gradually add small amounts of water until mixture attains the consistency of bread dough. You may not use the entire 1/2 cup of water. You can make colors not commercially available, such as purple by creatively mixing colors. Store in an airtight container or plastic bag. It lasts a long time.

Stove Top Playdough
1 cup white flour
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup water
2 teaspoons vegetable food coloring
1 tablespoon oil

Mix flour, salt and cream of tartar in a medium pot. Add water, food coloring, and oil. Cook and stir over medium heat 3-5 minutes. Mixtrure will look like a globby mess and you'll be sure its not turning out, but it will. When it forms a ball in the center of the pot, turn out and knead on a lightly floured surface. Store in an air tight container or plastic bag.

I use old peanut butter jars, and have been making this recipe for a few years now, it does last quite awhile.

Lee,
Instead of food coloring have you tried using a package of soft drink mix or baking cocoa? This gives it a scent or flavor for an extra sensory experience.
Also try the different flavors of the extract products in your kitchen.

One year I made a batch to give to my nieces with no food coloring and used vanilla flavoring turned out white.
The next batch I used almond flavoring and red food coloring and it smelled like cherries. And then I used green food coloring and mint flavoring.
Then split the batches and had three different colors in each gift; red, white and green for christmas.

No, I have not done that but thanks for the idea! I hope you come back to reveal yourself.
