ISO Colored Wax Granules and/or Colored Sand

I am hoping that one of you crafters can help DD & I.

She found a decoration in a magazine that she'd like to use at her wedding reception. It looks like a glass vase with colored wax granules in it that look kinda like colored sand with a long wick. You use more than one color and kind of layer the colors.

It also says that you can use colored sand and place a small candle on top.

We found some colored sand at Hobby Lobby but not in the shade of pink that she is using for her wedding...the color of a pink rose.

Anyone know where we could find some colored sand in that shade or the wax granules???

Any & ALL help will be greatly appreciated!!!

COLORED SAND

I have had success coloring my own sand. Just buy the white "sandbox" sand at Walmart, then proceed to color as you would sugar. The gel food coloring (such as Wilton) works much better than liquid -- doesn't take as much to achieve desired color -- and you can make the sand just about any color you want, as long as you're willing to work with the coloring until you get what you want! I have seen the Colored Wax Granules at Michaels Crafts and a craft store that was near our house in Pa. called Pat Catans ( not sure if they are all over or just certain states).

I never imagined that they were so hard to find! I did a web search for them under everything that I could think to call them but all I could find were websites out of the US.

Do you have any local candle companies around you? Maybe you could try asking them if their supplier could help you??

How about EBAY? Ya never know what could turn up there, lol!!

Where did she find the decoration?

We checked at Michael's.....they have really downsized that store since the last time I went in there!!! Must be because about 6 months ago a new Hobby Lobby opened just down the street and it is twice the size of the old Hobby Lobby that was a couple miles away from Michaels.

Anyway, Michaels was of no help at all!!

Hobby Lobby had the colored sand but the only shade of pink they had was more of a fuschia. We asked if they could special order some in a light shade of pink and they said no...the only colors available to them are on the shelf.

I called every craft place in our phone book.....even the ones that said "wholesale only". No luck!

She found the decoration in some bridal/wedding supply catalog that she ordered on-line.....problem is that she doesn't remember which catalog it was in. She tore out the page and threw the catalog in the trash....over a week ago. She never thought she'd have any trouble finding the supplies locally.

I am going to Houston this weekend for my niece's graduation so I will to try to look for some while I am there.

Hi! Abear.

Just a thought, how about using granulated salt and food coloring?

Just pour the salt into a pie pan and add some food coloring and stir with a fork and keep adding more food coloring until you get the shade you want.

I do this with granulated white sugar for my sugar cookies instead of buying the decorative sugars and get more value for my money. I hope that you can use this idea.
Good luck with your plans.

Vicky

I'm a little late getting into this but VicRae what a wonderful idea! My candle supplier also sells granulated soy wax that you could mix with liquid candle coloring although the coloring might be tricky.

Abear

This may be too late but I found colored sand at Bittercreek Candle Company in Wisconsin, in all different colors.

Cindy, Here is a link for wax crystals. Maybe you could try calling the store to see if you could buy them wholesale if you are going to be buying a lot of it. They are a bit pricey this way.
