AirFreshners

How cute! What a fun idea!

Somewhere, I read that you can make your own air freshners from oils/potpourri oil and unflavored gelatin. Do you know where I can find this recipe? These would be fun to put in jars that I paint.

Hi Cyn,
I hope this is what you wanted please let me know.

How To Mke Air Freshners

You can buy gel air fresheners, but if you make your own you can choose your own scent, color, and decorations. It's easy and fun! For holiday appeal, consider layering different colored gels or using seasonal fragrances (e.g., pine or cinnamon for Christmas).
Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: less than an hour

Here's How:
1. Heat 1 cup of distilled water to boiling.

2. Stir in 4 packages of unflavored gelatin (e.g., Knox) until dissolved.

3. Remove the mixture from heat and stir in the other 1 cup water.

4. Add 10-20 drops of essential oil or other concentrated fragrance. If desired, add food coloring to tint your gel. You may also wish to add a mold inhibitor, such as 1-2 T salt OR a small amount of potassium sorbate OR a splash of vodka.

5. Pour the gel into clean baby food jars or other small, decorative containers.

6. The gel will set at room temperature, although you can place the air fresheners in the refrigerator for a quick set (and scented fridge).

7. Decorate your jars as desired and enjoy!

Tips:
This project requires heat, so adult supervision is required.
Feel free to scale the recipe up or down to make the amount of gel you need (e.g., 1 cup water to 2 pkg gelatin).
If you wish, you can (carefully) dissolve gelatin in concentrated liquid potpourri (no other ingredients needed) to make your air fresheners. Use a ratio of 1 cup liquid to 2 packages gelatin.
You can make multicolored gels by pouring a new color over one which has already set up (like making a layered gelatin dessert).

What You Need:
2 c distilled water
essential oil/fragrance
4 pkg unflavored gelatin
empty jar
food coloring (optional)
mold inhibitor (optional)

Another Site on Gel freshner Makeing

You can make your own great smelling gel air fresheners, using liquid potpourri, or from scratch. They make great gifts!
You will need:

2 cups of distilled water
Essential oil/fragrance of your choice.
4 packages of knox gelatin
Food coloring (optional)
Heat 1 cup of water almost to a boil. Add the gelatin and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat add another cup of distilled water, 10-20 drops of oil/fragrance, and food coloring if desired.
You can replace food coloring and oil/fragrance with premade liquid potpourri (available at most craft stores, candle shops, etc.). Just make sure it's the concentrated kind or it won't retain its smell. The procedure would be the same. Heat 1 cup of the liquid potpourri, almost to a boil. Stir in 4 packets of Knox gelatin, until dissolved. Then stir in 1 cup cool liquid potpourri.

Pour the mixture into clean baby food jars and set at room temperature overnight until "set". You can place the jars in the refrigerator if you need them to set more quickly, but be aware that the smell will permeate the fridge.

For gift giving, you can decorate the baby food jars by wrapping with material, or glueing on wallpaper, stickers, wrapping paper, etc.

To use, place the jar on the stovetop (not directly on the burner!) while cooking, heat in a potpourri burner, or simply set out on a table and enjoy the aroma.

AirFreshners Recipes

Wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love the idea of slowly melting the gelatin in with the liquid potpourri and then setting up layers! Thanks for sending this out!
