GETTING STARTED ON SCRAPBOOKING
Where in the World Do I Start?
You've tucked them away in shoeboxes. They're gathering dust in the attic. You can barely remember the people, places or events in them. And yet your family photographs are some of your most priceless possessions.
What's the best way to save your precious photographs?
A scrapbook preserves and displays photos for future generations to enjoy.
What is a scrapbook?
Decorating photo album pages using your own photos and products such as photo-safe paper, stickers, markers and pattern-edged scissors makes a scrapbook. Materials such as glue and markers should be acid-free. Papers and paper products like stickers must be acid-free and lignin-free, or photos will discolor and disintegrate over time. The most important materials are photo-safe papers, adhesive and creative ideas for designing personalized album pages. You provide the most important part-your memories.
How Do I Get Started?
Scrapbooking is all about getting those precious photos out of shoeboxes and attics and into albums where they can be seen and shared. Best of all, no experience or expertise is required-it's as simple as cutting and gluing.
1. First, select your photos based on theme or event of the album page-Mark's first birthday, Susan's basketball tryouts or an everyday event like the kids' bath time. Think of each page as having a story to tell. It's easiest to start with your most recent photos and work backwards.
2. Select plain and patterned papers to complement your photos. A themed patterned paper is a fun way to mirror your photo's story-and there is a paper for practically every theme! Then choose a solid paper that coordinates. It's often easiest to select a book of themed papers (the papers are perforated to tear out of the book) so you don't have to spend a lot of time picking lots of individual sheets.
3. Crop your photos to trim away any excess background. Cropping allows you to get more photos per page and makes pages more interesting-you can even cut photos in oval, star or heart shapes. If you're nervous about cutting your photos, make a color copy. And be sure not to crop out historical items like houses and cars that will be fun to see years from now.
4. Mat your photos. Glue the cropped photo onto a plain or patterned paper and cut 1/8"-1/2" away using plain or patterned scissors. When using a patterned paper as a background, remember the Golden Rule of Patterned Paper: always mat your photo onto a solid paper so the paper doesn't overwhelm the photo!
5. Arrange your elements on the page and glue down. Add decorative elements like stickers, Punch-Outs or die-cuts.
6. Journal your story. You can write directly on the page, but sometimes it's easier (and less stressful) to journal onto a separate scrap of paper, then mat this piece and glue it to the page. If you goof, you can just flip the paper over and start again.
That's it-you've completed your first page!
If you're using a 3-ring binder album, simply slip your finished page into a sheet protector and into the binder. Be sure to use a sheet protector with whatever type of album you're using to prevent pages from being soiled by fingerprints.
Remember that there are few rules when it comes to scrapbooking! You don't have to spend huge amounts of time on every page-maybe decorate every second or third page more elaborately.

Hi There, Don't forget to use acid free products. Anything with acid will eventually break down and anything it comes into contact with will break down too. Such as newspaper print, if you clip an articale just scan it to acid free paper to make safe. Hope I didn't intrude. Thanks Bonnie
