Jar Cakes

Has anyone ever made a Jar Cake? I found some neat recipes in a book called 365 Ways to Prepare For Christmas and it gives several recipes for making Jar Cakes: Pumpkin Spice Jar Cake, Pina Colada Jar Cake and Chocolate Applesauce Jar Cake each one makes 8 Jar Cakes.

It gives the ingredients and how to mix, then you put them in a jar (doesn't say what size but I'm guessing Pint Size) and bake in the oven. When it's done, you put put hot canning lids on them and tighten and it seals the cakes like when you can fruits or vegetables.

I've seen cakes in a can at the store before but never seen or heard of this before in jars.

How would you get the cake OUT of the jar after baking?

I just found this link on allrecipes about this idea. Looks like you have to measure very carefully to make sure it won't overflow.

I talked with my girlfriend who does alot of baking, candies, etc. and she said to make sure to grease the jar well and when I looked back at the recipes it does say that, so they would slide right out.

Anna my mil makes zuchennie bread in jars all the time the stay moist and are really good and keep forever you can bake any kind of cake in a jar she uses the large mouth pint jars you just put you batter in the jar id say half way up you dont want to much and as soon as there done baking you put the lids and rings on and it willseal thats it my brother in laws loveto take them to work they just eat it right out of the jar with a fork

Thanks I'm glad you mentioned the wide mouth jars, I was thinking on that one and glad to know someone canned and survived, I was a little sceptical about the safety of it.

My aunt even made Fruit cake and baked it in the jar

I don't know I'd ever find a jar with a wide enough mouth.

If you sealed it right away would that be a way to preserve it and howlong do you think it would last like that?

you just buy regular canning jars pint wide mouth

and they will last as long as they are sealed years if they last without being eatin lol

I am like all of you. First thing I thought "How do you get it out of the jar?" I never thought of canning a cake. Most of my cakes don't last long enough to can. I am going to look up this sight and just might give it a try...
