digital camcorder versus DVD camcorder

After the holidays, I would like to buy a camcorder. One day I was looking at a camcorder, and showed my DS that I wanted that one, pointing to a digital camcorder. He looked at them and pointed to another one. The one he pointed to was a DVD camcorder.

Now, I am confused.

I am guessing maybe the difference is the DVD one burns the movie right to a DVD. And the digital is like a digital camera. The images get put on your computer, and than can be burned to cd/dvd???

Can anyone tell me what the differences really are? Any input as to which would be a better buy?

Hi Karen!

I just got a Sony Handicam DVD recorder from my DH for Christmas! Yeay! We're going to Disney tomorrow so I realllllly wanted one..

But anyway...

He explained that the digital camcorders record to a memory chip, and when it's full, you need to download the data to your PC. ( I wasn't clear on if you could buy new memory chips, or how expensive they might be. )

With the DVD camcorder, the DVD if full, pops out, you pop another in. You can play the discs dierctly on your DVD player to enjoy on the big screen without having to plug your camera into the TV. YOU could also sendcd the discs to friends and family for them to see...

With the digital ones, you'd need to burn a DVD to share them .. or just watch it on your PC. or with the camera attached to the TV.

He said the DVD was a better option for how we'll use the camera ( vacation and general stuff out of the house mostly ) because we won't have to wory about runnning out of memory on a digital chip.

If I have any of this info wrong.. I am sure some techno-savy lady here will correct me.. But there it is as I understand it.

Good luck with your choice!

Val

I noticed that some of the digital cameras have the ability to take movies on them. Would that be the same thing? Would that be instead of getting a camcorder? Guess you can tell I'm confused!! LOL
