Our Sunday School Class is 50+. Our parties were in a large private home. The theme one year was "Wear something you would have worn 30 Years Ago." Then, you had to tell a story about it. My husband wore his bib overalls and said he wore them to school years ago, no shirt and no shoes, in the hills of VA. I wore an evening pantsuit, with my hair up in French Curls. This was 6 years ago. They are coming back into fashion now for evenings. I told the story that this is what I would have worn to an evening out, the opening of the NCO Club on the base where I worked as a civilian and where my lst husband worked in the NCO Club.
Another thing we did was like "Newly Wed Game" but the participants had been married at least 30 years. It was fun, with some of the women getting mad when the husband didn't know her preferences, with one woman hitting her husband on the head with a small magazine. He asked a friend if they had an extra bedroom in which he could sleep that night.

I have a question about name exchanges: How do you convince your family they are a good idea?

We used to do a gift exchange and it seemed to work out until the red pajamas incident. One person got red pajamas or something that they didn't like and felt it was a "joke" gift. So after that, there have been no name exchanges. Now everyone (more or less) buys or feels pressured to buy for everyone.

I don't even like going to the Christmas things anymore because of it. And, in fact, this year, we are not going.

Suggestions?

I can't afford to buy everyone something. If I only spent $5 on each, I would be over $150. (Not to mention what do you get for $5?) Just the kids in the family would total $95. (Still not an option)

Name exchanges are great, but I don't know how to overcome the red pajama argument. Or the argument that some people don't know some as well as others.

Help?

Lightbulb White Elephant Gift Exchange

Why not have everyone participate in a white elephant exchange. This is where you bring something you already have but don't want. You could do one for kids and one for adults. We enjoy this type of gift giving and it doesn't cost anyone anything but some wrapping paper. This is how we decide who gets what. Put numbers on slips of paper for the number of adults playing, then have each person draw a number. Number 1 goes first and unwraps a gift. Number 2 decides if he wants the gift from number 1 or a new gift. If he takes gift from number 1 then number 1 unwraps another gift and then number 3 goes. The last person has the advantage as can choose from all the unwrapped gifts or take the last wrapped gift. Repeat the above instructions for kids.

After all it is Jesus' birthday that we celebrate at Christmas!!!!
