As a child our family tradition was opening gifts on Christmas eve and then there was 1 present left by Santa that I would find on Christmas morning, so when I married and had children I just continued that. Since my kids are grown, everything happens Christmas eve here and Christmas day is spent dropping off cookies or muffins at the neighbors and making calls to out of town family and friends. I have GrandPuppies so they dont mind opening their gifts on Christmas eve, they only care that they get Stuff, giggle.
when I was growing up the presents were always opened on Christmas Day...when I lived with my uncle it was Christmas Day AFTER I got home from church....
In my husbands family they open gifts at midnight Christmas Eve/ Morning...
Thats what we have begun to do coz we never taught Santa...we told our kids Santa was a game daddy played. With my daughter Maggy I think she is going to teach my grandson the whole Santa thing, so she will wait till Christmas Day I suppose so he can 'deliver' the gifts...LOL

LOL Cathy we openm our gifts AFTER I get home from church. When I was a young girl we opened one when we got in from Midnite Mass it was always pj's then we opened the rest the next morning when we woke up. When I married the second time my hubby had been opening up on Christmas Eve but since I was use to opening Christmas Day then that is what we did AFTER we got home from church and David (his son) did not mind at all. Otto is gone now 13 yrs but Judy and I still open on Christmas day and all of my children do.

When I was growing up, we were allowed to open one gift on Christmas Eve and the rest were opened on Christmas morning. When I was really young, Santa would wake us up (like we were ever alseep!) and give us the one gift.
For the last 14 yrs or so, my friend and her family come to my house to exchange gifts on Christmas Eve. We will also open one ore two of our own gifts. The stockings and other gifts are always opened on Christmas morning.
I have always put my son's big gifts out on Christmas Eve after midnight mass (while everyone sleeps). That way I didn't have to worry about him picking out a big gift for Christmas Eve.
This year is the first year my son doesn't do Santa I still made him write a Santa letter though

Dval that was sweet "santa" waking you up when you were little. I hope your son enjoys his Christmas this year. At least by having him write Santa you have a good idea of things he might really want to have.

When my two oldest were little a dear friend of my dad's would pose as Santa. We left a toy or something the kids wanted wrapped and tagged in a pillow case on the porch. Dad would come by and say he wanted to see our tree and take pictures of the kids in front of it for Nanny (my mom). Santa came a few minutes later and gave the kids the gifts in the bag telling them he'd be back in the night after they were asleep. They got to open those gifts while sitting on Santa's lap. It was wonderful.
One year after dad developed the pics he gave me a copy of the kids in front of the tree. I said, Oh My Goodness! He asked What? I said look ion the window. There was Santa's face looking in the window.
Welost Santa a couple years before Miriam came along. I really miss those Christmas Eve visits.
