Marcie-
Hope you are still on.... The doc mentioned during our visit that encopresis could be a possibility. He said that the "runniness" could be due to an impacted stool. He used to be afraid to sit on the potty- we seem to have overcome that. He doesn't ever have a normal stool and after all the reading I just did I may not sleep tonight. I am going to stop the dairy and try that. I have also noticed he seems to start to make a face while he appears to be pushing but nothing appears of any substance.... so ready to cry here

Kris, I'm sure you have gotten tremendous help from Marcie, bless her heart , but I just wanted to tell you from my experience with my nephew's encopresis, you keep pushing that doctor. He sounds completely unconcerned about what could turn into a very serious problem! If you get no satisfaction from him try different doctors. If this is encopresis it is very painful for your child and could end up being very embarrasing for him in social situations. A lot of doctors are too busy and don't want to take the time to come up with an accurate diagnosis. You are the only advocate your child has on this!

Hugs and encouragement to you. I would be interested to hear what you find out.

Lisa-
Thanks for your post. Marcie has indeed been helpful. The doc just saw my son for this last week and isn't my sons usual pedi so we really had to try and fill in the gaps for him. I just started to notice the symptoms and he mentioned the encopresis as being a possibility but felt it was remote from the abdominal exam. However, my son does have ADHD and usually there is comorbidity with another disorder, such as this one. But he can go out socially and not have a problem and it isn't for lack of ttryin on his part. We are really stumped and I am so afraid for him and what effect this will have on his self-esteem..... Hopefully we will resolve this soon....

My 5yr old with Encopresis

Hi Ladies,
I too have a child who has been diagnosed with Encopresis.
I took my child in to see his Doc right before his 5th Birthday to find out why I couldnt potty train my child.
The doc had him take 3 xrays after hearing us out and then diagnosed him with Encopresis. My son has tried everything from Prunes, Enemas, Suppositories (sp). Finally, the doc has had him on Miralax for 6mths now and it seems to help soften the stools. He has to have this in a drink once a day. It is a prescribed med.
Since this has been going on for so long we are now looking into having some other exams done to see if it could possibly be anything else. My son will turn 6 this year and I would love to register him for Kinder but am having a lot of difficulty with just enrolling him for daycare because of this.
As of yesterday his doc had blood drawn and is going to look into his white blood cell count, his thyroid and some other stuff. She would like to have him drink something to see how it goes through his intestines, but is going to consult with other docs to see if its safe for his age. We are also going to have them check on his motor skills and everything that is in that category. My son doesnt seem to have any problems in that area but we would like to check it out anyway.
(Mind you I am a military wife so Thank God we have a military doc and do not have to pay for any of this medical service or else I dont know how I would be able to afford it. ) My heart goes out to all of you parents who are also going through this.
I am on the verge of depression with all of this. I have never felt so helpless when it comes to helping my child.
I am most definately thinking about trying the whole dairy idea.
I will let you know more as I learn more. Until then stay strong and dont give up. Our little ones need us now more than ever.
Peggy
