Children with ADD or ADHD

I am looking for some new behavior modification tips on raising children with ADD or ADHD. I have a little experience, as I have a 23 y/o with ADHD (he is now in the military), an18 y/o and an 11 y/o with ADD (all boys). My problem is my 8 y/o son, he has ADHD and also a learning disability (he is just now learning to read). I would appreciate all the input I can get.

I , literally, just found this thread buried over at the Recipe Exchange Forum.

I am moving it to the Children's Health Forum.

sjrussell - I am so sorry that no one ever found this before at the other forum. Not sure if you still want/need input.

I'll dig through some of the stuff my doctor gave me and see what I can come up with. Have you checked the library? I've checked out some books on the subject and have gotten some good information about some subjects that have been an issue for my child.

I have triplets and have two boys and 1 girl both my boys have it and they were seen and diagnosed by anuerologist. One of my sons also has sensory integration and his finemotor skills are off. Its hard we found for my son he could read at 2. SO this is different from what your son has . I found though taking him to a nuerologist and having him go to occupational thereapy at our local childrens hospital had helped alot and they gave us tips and things to help with him. At school we have had to have him sit at what he calls his desk. They are 6 and in kindergarten they will be 7 in aug. they have him with ot in school 1/2 hr twice a week they do a lot of differnt things with him for behavior modification. they have a special seat for him to sit on its a pillow thats supposed to help him concentrate better . I suggest going to a nuro dr. and talking about a program maybe at your local childrens hospital OT has done wonders for my son. who wasnt even talking much at 3 hes done wonders since then. If you need someone to talk to email me directly. Momofbpi@aol.comThanks Kim

Just was skimming some of the
forums and noticed the add one.
I had someone give me this website.
Thought maybe some of you would be interested.

www.addresources.org/article_checklist.php

My oldest son(stepson) who is 21 has add/adhd
Had lots of problems with him in school as well as at home.
Really was a challenge for me.
He still has problems today. I hope this site helps some of you out.
Meds do help incredibly with this problem.

Thanks for the info on the site. My boys are on concerta which helps but my son with sensory problems thats something that has to be taken care of as things come up. With the OT at the hospital he has met all his goals so they have discharged him so he just has ot at school which i hav eto keep an eye on to make sure hes not starting to backtrack. Its really hard it is.

My 12 ds has ADD and my 10 ds has ADHD. The older doesnt have so much of the jittery activity going on in his body and can sit for longer periods of time.. I have heard in lots of places that Karate is good for both of these conditions. I will be putting my boys in classes when our Y opens back up in the fall. Both boys started on Ritalin and are now on Concerta. i have seen so many kids that have had too strong a perscription at their school and were just zombies. When it was something that i noticed i suggested to the teacher that they let the parents know. if the parents arent told they cant have the docs adjust the meds. Most teachers dont realize what an important part they have in this.
My youngests son has recently found a liking of chess. He really has to concentrate on this one.

Bless you!
