Cleaning Toys
Linda Cobb, the "Queen of Clean," shows how to clean toys with items from around the house.
* Note: Small toys can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Use twist-ties to hold smaller items to the top rack and place bigger toys (like rattlers) in the silverware basket. This is perfectly safe and convenient.
Plastic Toy Paste
3/4 cup baking soda
1 Tbs. dishwashing liquid
Mix ingredients in small glass bowl. Use a soft toothbrush to apply to plastic dolls or other plastic toys. When all the dirt is off, use a damp sponge to wipe clean.
Plastic Stain Cleaner
cream of tartar
lemon juice
Mix ingredients in a small bowl with a cotton swab. Swab onto a stain that is difficult to remove and leave on for 30 minutes. This will work to bleach out the stain.
Stuffed-Animal Dry Cleaner
1/2 cup cornstarch
OR
1/2 cup baking soda
Place stuffed animals in a large plastic garbage bag, then pour in cornstarch or baking soda. Seal the bag and give it a good shake. Remove the stuffed animals and, over a sink, brush the fur to remove the dust, dirt and cleaning agent.
More Tips
Rubbing alcohol works well with plastic stains. If the stain is very tough, try cuticle remover. Allow the cuticle remover to set for 30 minutes before wiping off.
If dust mites are a problem, place stuffed animals in a plastic bag and pop in the freezer overnight. Allow it to defrost before returning to the child. This will kill the dust mites.
