Adderall xr

My eight year old son has just started Adderall xr for ADHD. Has anyone else used this & have you had any luck with it?

Adderal

Yes, we used it for our 13yob. It was disasterous! It caused him to be VERY balligerant and defiant...way more than normal. We took him off of it and went back to Methylphenadate. I was clued in by a special ed teacher/friend about the negative affect that many kids had had from Adderal. He's now on Strattera; the jury's still out.

I give you moms a tremendous pat on the back. It can't be easy for you.

I happened to catch a DR PHIL show about this problem and there is so much info for you moms with tips and questionnaires to help guide you. Please go to the site I've posted. It can't hurt and it just might give you new insight and help

I would also get Dr Lawlis' book, " The ADD Answer"

My 13 year old has mild ADD and we tried Straterra which did nothing and since we went to a developmental pediatrician she suggested Adderall XL. We started out at 20 mg. per day which did well and nowI am trying 30 mg. per day.
Since he started on Adderall his grades have gotten much better and his concentration level improved alot. I have his teachers closley monitor him and his behavior (which has never been a problem) and all say that he is very polite, respectful and focused.
This is something that a parent needs to stay on top of, as I'm sure you do. In fact I will probably go back to 20 mg. per day, I really don't see a change ( between 20 and 30 ) and the less meds the better.
Plus one other thing my husband and I run a fairly tight ship and never allow his ADD to become an excuse for inappropriate behavior.

Hi all well from what i have seen with this med it realy has a down side about how it effect the kids my step son and hephew both take it my step son was taking like 40 mg a day and he was alway in moods he would want to either fight or cry all the time well he stoped taking it with out his mom knowing and since then he is not as emoti0nal all the time and he is not as hard to deal with ..on the other hand my nephew who is on it they stared him out on 20mg and moved him up to 30 mg a day and he has got to where he is like a time bomb he goes off at the drop of a hat over nothing and they took him back to the doctors and they have not pit him on 40 mgs a day and still no improvments with it ..I am going to share with my mother in law and all the site from DR phil cause the nephew realy dont eat that well and what he does eat may be alot of what is causing his problem with the meds he is on for the ADHD

My ds is going to be 9...

one month from today...YIKES

Anyway...he is on Adderall XR 15mg per day. It is the best med we have tried so far. We started out on Ritalin and were up to 35mg/day and I said NO more. It worked, but wore off 1/2 way through the school day. We switched to Concerta at 27mg/day. this was also wearing off and just wasn't "strong" enough. We doubled that to 54mg/day. the second day he was on the 54mg his teacher said "his meds aren't working!!" I wanted to blow a gasket...after a month of that we went to the dr and ds had lost 13 lbs in 2 months!! that was 13% of his body weight. The dr said NO NO NO... we switched to adderall XR at only 15 mg/day and it is much better. He has gained a few lbs back but still doesn't eat much. My only complaint about this med is that I have a hard time getting him to sleep at night.

OK, May be this is dumb question... but I need to know. How did you guys know your kids have ADD?
What are the signs, symptoms or signals?
My DD is 6 years old and is exceptionally smart, well behaved and advanced academically compared to her peers.
But at school some days she just talks, stares at her work and plays around and she doesn't finish her work in time. When asked she says it's because her teacher gave her what she calls 'baby work'!
Her teacher passingly/jokingly suggested it is a some kind of ADD...

My son is 13. Ryan cannot focus for long periods and has difficulty retaining information that he has read. He is very well behaved at school and is not even close to having hyperactivity.
Actualty since about 1st. or 2 nd. grade I noticed that he could not retain info. very well and even had a hard time playing simple board games. The concept of counting backwards while playing a game was difficult.
He could count backwards on a normal basis but playing a game for some reason made it difficult.
With Adderrall XL he is focusing much better and retaining his school work, grades have improved.
I am a preschool teacher and to me it sounds as if your child is a typical 6 yr. old, very busy. Since she is mentioning that she is bored, school may not be challenging her enough at . I suggest that you talk to her (school) counselor and discuss the possibility of testing her for putting her in enriched classes. She might be too smart for the level she is working at.
Hope this helps.

well with my step son and nephew they both have ADHD and they cant seem to keep focused in class and they are always moving and all and they are not able to do more than one thing at a time ..I would have to agree with barbsplace4
here i would have them test her and see if she might need to be advanced to the next class or I know some schools have the move advanced classes for each grade ..but it dont sound like she has ADD is she able to stay focused on more than one thing at a time .this is one way the test to see if the child is ADD is if they are not able to do more than one thing at a time they say they are somewhat ADD
