Spendaholic!

Help! I am a spendaholic. If I see it, want it, I buy it. I do a budget every month and pay bills on certain days so that I can spread out my husbands pay for as long as possible and each month I find that we've been unable to save again and of course I blame him for it. LOL. Just like an alcoholic I'm gonna blame someone besides myself. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to save and how NOT to spend? I think the grocery store is where I spend the most money. On average it's around $200 a week or more and there are only three of us.

OH MY! ~ OH MY! ~ OH MY!!

I'd sure like to help you in some way. My question to you, would be...."Do you use, or believe in using manufacturer's coupons, when you shop?" If not, and you think you might be interested in trying, please email me, and I'll give you the information on my coupon swap. carolzap@webtv.net

BARGIN SHOP !!!! use coupons look thur your ads see whats on sale and look for things you have coupons for try to use your bigger coupons .55-1.00 at a store that doubles coupons up to a dollar. also for clothes and other items alway look at the clearance stuff alot of times when you go to the register it's marked down even more . look at things that are buy one get 1 free that way you can stock up on certain things. i do all of these things and it help.

You answered your own question. If you don't see it you won't buy it. Stay out of the stores! Find something else to do.

I use to be the same way, it was easy to blame hubby for not making enough, and then I read somewhere that he went out and worked to support our family, and how dare she disrespect that by wasting as much as one penny. WOW, talk about a God-Breeze...........

I have heard, but, not actually done, to take a certain amount of money(cash, ya know, the green stuff) with you when you go shopping. Leave the check-book,credit cards, and debit cards at home. That way, you have no choice but to spend only what you have. Take your little calculator, and tally up as you go. When you reach your limit, you are done shoppping...

I say I have never done this, but, actually I have, when we did not have a checking account, credit cards or debit cards. I hated it. But, it worked, and now we do have those things, because we started spending wiser. CORRECTION***** *I* started spending wiser. It was kinda humiliating at the checkout register to have to put stuff back, pick thru your bags, and say, 'Take this off, no keep that..etc'

One way that I have helped my family is that I go shopping for groceries even when I dont need to. Sounds strange, yes, but, if you have a full freezer and full pantry, then, on the weeks that you really dont need anything, check the above posts about coupons and store circular sale items, and go spend X amount of money. Not much, just enough. I have found that this helps the next week, when the paycheck may be lean, or there is another pressing bill that must be paid, and I dont think I can go to the grocery store.

Last, but, not least, is that I used to go thru the whole grocery store and put every thing in the basket that I wanted. Then, before checking out, I would get another basket, and item by item, go thru it and decide if I really needed it, or just wanted it, or, could we really afford it if I really only wanted it. I would end up putting a few things back, probably should have put more back, but, it helped.

Now, I look in my basket when I am done, before checking out, and say to myself...Is there processed foood in here, something that I can make at home, which will be cheaper, healthier, and costs less.. SOmetimes I find stuff that can be taken out, that I can make at home, wont be so unhealthy, and will fill my time so I am not out shopping more!!

Check out the frugal threads on this site, they are great.

Be blessed,
Beckie

I have to agree with you all. I a a spendaholic too. My biggest is kids clothes, I shop at the resale stores and the salvation army and everything is so inexpensive, I but twice as much, how can I pass it up. lol

My biggest money saver is to stay home, I CANNOT go out into a store with out buying something. I play a game with my self and my kids t see how long mommy can go with out spending any money except grocerys.

And I will stress again Coupons!!!!! In feel a bad shoping trip is where I one save 35-40 % If I can't save at least 50% I am bummed. I use a coupon service and am at a point where I can stock up on sales with coupons in a big way, luckily I have a large pantry. (ie. 2 cases of pace picante the other day at .25 each or 12 boxes electrosol at $1 a box)

And I do do the cash thing. I was forever spending next weeks paycheeck if I took to cheekbook with so now it is cash and when I am out I am out until next week. What ever I wnted will have to wait. I have become much more patient.

Lists I make lists for the grocery store. While I make my runing list all week I make what I think the items will cost on it. Then when I make out my final list for the store I trim it right then and there to fit my budgeted amount. (here it is 100 for a week food and walmart type stuff including diapers- for a family of 6).

OH and a menu I plan mine by the month, then I can spread out some of the grocery spending and plan in a meal out (once a month) If I know it's coming I can wait and not call "pizza man" and knowing what to thaw or get ready the night before is a big help no more last minute rush for whats for dinner. I buy the sales this month and freeze, use them the when planning next months menu.

Sure hope this is of some help. Lord knows I try and try and still never seem to be ahead. either.

Good luck
Smiles
Denise

I have found out about staying out of the stores. I started once a month shopping, and I don't go into the supermarket or WalMart or wherever. I don't care if they are having the best sale you ever saw on whatever!! The trap is believing that you will NEVER see it on sale again, you must buy it now!
I used to buy huge amounts of things because they were on sale, but I found that our rate of consumption was very slow on things. A case of picante sauce would last us at least a year, even if it did only cost .25 each. For us, that would be a bad choice. Even overstocking on nonperishables has a limit. Unless you have a huge house or basement, garage for the overstock you find it to be more of a burden than a blessing.
I go to Aldi's once a month and buy all the basics, sugar, flour, eggs, bread, cereals. I go to WalMart once a month and buy all my paper goods, pharmacy items, tolietries, and whatever special gifts I need in the month.
I go to a big discount meat market and buy all my meats, and produce. I go to a local dairy store and buy milk and half and half, because they are cheaper than any supermarket.
I don't buy anything else except milk for the rest of the month. It's amazing how freeing it is, when you don't spend so much time shopping. Shopping isn't meant to be a hobby!
:p

Put the money into savings first!
then budget the rest for the month....

Make up menus... for each week. You'll find you will wind up with extra money....

One thing I forgot I also began overspending at yard sales and flea markets!! I kind of felt justified in spending, because I always got a bargain!! I ended up having to have 2 yard sales a year of my own for all the things I only thought I wanted! :p

charlen..

Well, please seek the advise of a professional counselor... you may have an underlying cause for this spending. The sooner you go, the faster you'll be in control of your spending. *hugs* and good luck to you.
