Dh and I are taking Dave's Financial Peace University class. I am getting a little down about it. I do think dh is in it for show not really wanting to do the work.

What was the best advice you got from Dave? WEre you able to keep doing a budget?

I'd like to hear more about this program and if it really works for most everyone who has tried it.

We aren't in serious debt but not financially secure, either. This is one thing that I would like to work on this coming year.

I would appreciate any advice or tips to help us.

Thanks!

I like it. We took the classes last fall. Between me being sick, his new job and moving we missed about half of the classes. I would like to take it again if we can. Some things I question... a 0 budget in the checking account. That is you budget every cent without a cushion. I don't like that. We are still working on the baby steps. I am paying cash for groceries. I give myself $200 each payday. You can use the system as a guideline. You can take the classes online too.

I didn't know that you could take the classes online. I will look into that. Thanks!

I wouldn't like that either Connie, no cushion in case you add or subtract wrong and get hit with overdraft charges or bounced checks. Personally I've kept $100 in each checking account (joint/business) out of the balance as a cushion to cover errors or spending $20 before the check is deposited.

I did FPU several years ago & love it. I also keep a buffer in my checking account. I guess you could think of it as part of your emergency fund. I mean you would have an emergency if you accidentally overdrew. We have kept our budget going since Oct of 06. It has gone thru lots of adjustments, but once you get first your bills then your envelope catagories worked out the hard part is over. Doing the class with a group really helps with questions & accountability. And once you pay for the class you can go back when it is offered again.
