Question What's your method for filing receipts?

Receipts can pile up and get into a big, disorganized mess. How do you handle that in YOUR household?

I usually write on an envelope what it is and the date as soon as I bring an item home. Have a filing cabinet with household items, utilities & etc labeled. Have found it helps with returning items. Always make a copy of important receipts before sending helpful with correct addresses. Rebates are important to keep copies of too including receipts.

I staple it on a piece of notebook paper and write on the top of the page the name of the item and file it in a file I keep for each room in the house.

You mean you don't just stick them all in an empty plastic wet wipes container? Then when it's so full that I can't close it, I dump them in a pile and pick through and throw out old ones or ones no longer needed.

Filing

I keep all my loose recipes in folders which have been labeled to each catagory, Finding these folders in thrift stores or buying them when on sale at WalMarts.

About every 6 months I go thru these folders and discard any recipes I have an excess of . Also if I try a new recipe and I don't care for it's taste , then I discard it immediately. Also I date the recipe if I have printed it off the internet.

All the folders I stand up right in a kitchen cupboard next to a divided shelving, where I have additional cookbooks.

This seems to work for me and it's easy acccess to them.

I keep my daily receipts in envelopes by month. If it is a receipt for a big ticket item with a warentee, I staple the receipt to the warentee and place it in a file folder labled "Warentees".

I also staple all credit card receipts to the paid portion of the statement.

I can always find a receipt if I need to return an item because I usually know what month it was purchased. Birthday gifts etc.

Hope my 2 cents helps.

I use an expandable file to hold my bank statements, receipts and anything else I might need for when I file my taxes. I am self employed so need to show reciepts for any business expenses. (can you believe I have to save a whole years worth of grocery receipts and mark any food bought for my daycare? That's why I need an expandable file) I keep these files for about 3-5 years just incase I ever get audited. We have an accountant do our taxes so this also keeps everything together for him.
