Putting a cup of water in a broiler pan at the bottom of the oven when baking bread will also give a crispier crust. Some even mist the bread with water before baking.

I'll have to try that, Sueanne (when the weather here cools off! It's just way too hot for baking now!)

Re your comment about "no shortening in the bread"--I have quite a few French bread-type recipes that only contain flour, water, salt and yeast.
