I usually pack lunches unless we are running late. Our school system also offers breakfast but I try to make sure that my boys eat before getting on the bus. I pack because of cost and feel better knowing exactly what they are eating. What are some of the things that you pack in their lunches?

My daughter was looking through a recipe mag that I have. She picked out a recipe for kids' lunches that had a breaded chicken tender cut into thirds and layered onto a skewer with moz. cheese chunks and cherry tomatoes - she asked me if I would make them for her but for me to replace the cherry tomatoes with chunks of green apple. My first reaction inside was EEEWWW!! but I asked her if she would really eat that (she does love all 3) and she said "yes". I'm going to try them out at home and if she likes them, I will probably try sending them to school if I can figure out a way for the apples not to turn green. (I've never had any luck using lemon juice on them. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?)
BTW, motherof2, I love your soccer siggy line! We just signed Alexis up to play soccer. Her practices start this coming Friday. She's so excited. |

| | | I actually think that sounds delicious. I just got my DGSs lunch box, His sister already had one. I don't have him set up on a meal program yet for this school year. I stopped sending my DGD with a lunch because she kept misplacing and losing her lunch box. She wanted me to buy her a new one this year but I told her that she is going to have to show me that she can keep up with it before I buy a new one.
I guess it is that time again. |

Tami, the boys have played for a while and love it even if they are not the most athletic ones out there. It is a rec league so it is not as competitive as some. Tell them to have fun.

Since ds1 has moved out he's making his own lunches, and from what I hear he is actually making them so saving $.
I still make dh and ds2 lunches for school and dh takes bulk warm soft drinks to work to save $. I'm working with some savoury items to put in their lunch bags now, ds says he likes a couple of sweet things a couple of savoury things to go with his lunches during the week

Tell them to have fun. | My daughter plays for the same type of teams. It's a city league. From what I understand, they never kept score in the games but this year they will be. We keep telling her to just play for the fun of the game. So far, it's going ok. She wants to play basketball this fall, too. Same sort of coed team with no scoring. |

DD2 got "her own" lunch bag this year though she wont be packing often as we will be on the free or reduced breakfast/lunch program again this year.

Tami, I think that recipe sounds great!
Another school year begins and ds2 will again be bringing his lunch to school. Our school lunches are not very healthy nor are they big enough for a teenaged boy. You have the option of buying a second lunch but each lunch costs $2.50 so that would be $5 a day. Or if you pay the $2.50 you can buy things other than the main lunch like a slice of pizza, french fries, a salad etc. but again, not enough food. I do a lot of the same things DeBora does - buy a big bag of chips or pretzels and make individual bags myself, I buy large cans of fruit and make my own fruit cups and even large containers of yogurt and make my own yogurt cups. (I try to do trash free lunches as often as possible so have re-usable containers) I always add fresh fruits and an extra snack in case ds2 has to stay after school for sports.
