In the school district where we live. They offer breakfast and lunch. It is $2.75 a day for DS to eat. He has last lunch so there is many times, he gets seconds. It is cheaper for them to eat at school, cause my DS doesn't like to eat sandwich too often and there is no place to warm up food.

My kids eat at school breakfat and lunch since we qualify for the reduced lunch and pay $.40 a day per child.

I know I can't feed them breakfast and lunch for less than $.40. Last year we qualified for the free lunch which also includes breakfast.

I normally would be paying $4.05 for both for lunch and breakfast would be $2.50 a day which I wouldn't pay for.

I forgot that both the schools that my GKs attend provide breakfast free of charge. That means one less thing I have to do in the morning.

I find the lunches here are not great food choices and when I was really sick I found out that the little middle bought a baked potato and that is all she ate every day for lunch, potato and cheese. There are a lot of fatty choices that they just don't care for. (We aren't perfect or health nuts just don't want burgers, nuggets, pizza or other junk food every single day).

When I am feeling good and have the time I make them bento lunches which they and all the other kids love (even the ones who work) they are fun and just by their nature lead to a wide variety of choices. There is a link on my blog to our food blog (Loon-atics in the kitchen) if anyone is interested that has our recipes as well as our bento making experiences. The bento lunches can be hot, cold, room temp and you really don't need the fancy containers a tupperware or rubbermaid or even the dollar store divided containers all work.

Everyone LOVES these, their friends have offered to pay us and buy supplies etc but I usually just make extra for them to share so not always cheaper depending.

Otherwise to keep from boredom we try to do things like wraps, bagels, pita, salads and even hot things in a thermos.

dovie, I love Bento lunch boxes. I do trash free lunches for my ds2 which is not only good for the environment but saves money as well. Our school lunches are mostly fast food fare too and I don't want my dks eating all that fat and salt and sugar plus the portions for teenagers are just too small.

Our lunch here in Indiana, (I need to change my location, as we have moved) are $1.75 for elementary. Is that low compared to your school? I noticed one pp listed $3.00 for a school lunch.
Elementary school lunches are $2.15 this year and middle school lunches are $2.25 --and by far my son says that his lunches are much bigger than the lunches in the elem. school. There was talk of lunches in his school being raised to $2.50 sometime during the school year.

I was shocked to see that my son gets 3-4 choices in the main meal for lunch every day.

I'm glad that both of mine like to pack lunches and save the school lunches as a treat for once in a while.

I just called Steven's school to find out how much his lunches would be and they are $2.10 per day. I told him I would pay one day a week as he said Mom would pay one day. I wonder if they have the menu yet obline so I can print it out and then he can choose which day he wants to eat there. He is not much on sandwiches so not sure how we are going to do the other days. He loves grilled cheese but that would be yucky by time he ate it.

My dgd packs her lunch all but 5 times a month. I pay for 5 at the first of the month and she picks when to use them. If she goes over she must pay it from her allowance or work it off. Her mom is bad with money and I’m trying to see she isn’t

Good going Cau. Steven just came over and said Mom & Dad figured out a way to handle lunches all month. So told him I would do Ice Cream once a week for him. He was happy with that.
He is pretty level headed all the way around and is careful with money he gets. That is what I will give him for his b'day 28th of this month.
