Catwoman, my grandparents and parents never wasted a thing. And they never threw anything out, after all you never know when you may need it.

I guessing that christmas time would be hard to still keep up the cheer and fun with not much money at all.

A couple of paper ads I found from the Chicago Tribune 1929 and 1930

I love looking at those old ads! I picked up a couple of magazines awhile back from 1948 and they are in good condition. I am going to take some of the ads that pertain to movies and frame them for use in our home theater.
Some of the food ads I may use in my kitchen.

Catlover, those ads are so cool! And I love your idea of framing them!

I found this easy and cheap recipe.
I made this yesterday and it's a pretty nice tasting cake, moist. Next time I may try it with just ginger to make it a ginger type cake, I'd make it again.

Brown sugar cake
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease (I used margarine)
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
Directions
  1. In a medium saucepan combine the brown sugar, hot water, bacon grease, and raisins, over medium heat. Bring to a boil for 5 minutes, then set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour two 8x4 inch loaf pans.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves. Add the ingredients from the saucepan and mix until well blended. Divide evenly between the two prepared pans.
  4. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes in the preheated oven. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
