A week or so ago, I poured fresh salt into my salt shaker. Now, it is rock hard! I can't get it to loosen up. I opened it and tried to poke through it to no avail. Is there a secret to getting the salt pourable again?
This has just happened to me! I have been able to poke through hardened salt with a metal skewer or a chopstick. Then I put some grains of rice in with the salt to absorb the moisture.
If that doesn't work, I would put the salt shaker into a saucepan. Pour hot water into the salt shaker to "melt" the salt. Then use the salt water to make pasta.
Make sure your shaker is completely dry--and the LID is dry--before refilling it! That's what happened to me.
I always keep a few grains of uncooked rice in the bottom of the salt shaker, to absorb any moisture from the air.
The oddest thing is that we hae an incredibly dry climate so this never happens. The only thing I can think of is that my DD and her family were there while I was gone, so anything could have happened. When I get some time, whatever that is, I will have to clean it out and start all over. This time, I will add some uncooked rice.
