Big Grin Does Your Family Eat A Tradition New Year's Day Meal?

Do you serve a traditional New Year's day dinner at your house?

If so, do the foods symbolize things such as wealth or money OR is the meal one of your very own family traditions?

My Mother used to cook Pork and Sauerkraut every year for good luck--although I'm not really sure what each food symbolized.

My family will not eat Sauerkraut so I haven't come up with a good traditional meal.

My neighbors are eating the traditional black-eyed peas ( for coins) and greens ( for green money) and pork.

Yes, we always have pork sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes, a veggie, and rolls.

That is what my Mom always served. We were always told it was for good luck and money. I have no clue what stands for what. I always just assumed the pork and sauerkraut is what was for the luck and money.

I don't know what all we will have this year as DH wants to kick off the New Year on a low-carb diet. But, I will at least cook some black-eyed peas for luck as I do every year. It wouldn't be New Year's without them.

We usually have a big breakfast and the rest of the day is finger foods. However, tomorrow we are visiting my dd so we'll be having the finger goods for dinner.

Since we are in Las Cruces and will have to make our way back home tomorrow on New Year's Day I will have to heat up a can of black-eyed peas with dinner.

We usually have pizza. I grew up with Christmas leftovers on New Years. DH and his siblings got pizza and peanut butter. (He said the adults had beer and finger foods).

New Year's Tradition

Since I am from the North, and the traditional New Year's dinner was pork and sauerkraut for luck, and my husband is from the south, where his traditional New Year's dinner was black-eyed peas and cornbread, I just combine the two traditions, and make pork and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, and cornbread. The black-eyed peas takes care of the veggie, and the cornbread takes care of the bread part of the meal. Plus, it satisfies our traditions for luck for the New Year.

My great aunt always had black eyed peas on New Year's Day. I don't remember what all she had with them, but it was a big feast! I hated black eyed peas then, but was forced to always eat at least one for good luck!
