50's Party

Hi Everyone,
Every year at new years we(our church) try in do something a little different. We usually have some type of theme to go by. This year the leading vote was 50's. I'm open to any and all ideas. Especially for decorating, games and food. We will be in a fellowship hall at church and it has carpet so we are limited to the things we can do.Also we all have kids and I try and do something for them to, dont want anyone left out. The ages are from 3 to about 9 . Any ideas would be very helpful.

Krista

The first thing that came to my mind would be a sock hop or something along the lines of Fonzi, Joannie and Chachi (boy do I hope I really didn't screw up those name too much!).

Poodle skirts, black leather jackets w/white t-shirts---Maybe you could hold a contest for the best dressed?

You could think of a 50's diner and have hot dogs, burgers and fries. Rootbeer floats would be fun!! Popcorn too.

Dance contests would be fun. For the kids you could play "freeze dance" --they dance and then you turn off the music and everyone has to freeze. Those who don't have to sit down.

A Popcorn Ball toss would be a silly twist. Create a board with different shapes on it, cut out holes and give a point value to each one. Let them toss the ball through the holes. I would wrap the p. balls in plastic wrap though so that they dont make a mess!

If you come up with a theme or an idea of what you would like, let me know and I will try to help with some more ideas.

One of the Girl Scout troops here hosts a Sock Hop. They decorate using cardboard cutouts made to look like records, music notes and jukeboxes. They have a best dressed contest (the poodle skirts, jeans and white shirts, black jackets etc), one who can hula hoop the longest and who can blow the biggest bubble.

"Rock and Roll" is a great theme.. Get cut-outa of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe~ the Sock Hop is a terriffic idea. Maybe have Hula hoops, pick-up sticks, viewfinders .. they were all new in the 50's.
Lip synch contests were a big craze. Line dances like the Stroll... Or the rock and roll dances like the Mashed Potato, the Peppermint twist...

Jello was big in the 50's so were banana splits! Betty Crocker had her new cookbook put, so caseroles, like Tamale Pie, Chicken Friccassee were big hits in my house. Also was fried cicken and anything Bar B Q'd.

As far as clothes, don't forget penny loafers, and saddle shoes. The boys wore Duck "tail" hair styles, and girls wore a Flip or a Pony tail.

Belts at the waist, and sweater sets for girls and petticoats.. Lots and lots of petticoats. Pedal pushers and neckerchiefs were big, and the hep cats wore black turtle necks and listened to beatnik poetry and music.. LOLOL.. I still rememebr my older siblings dressing that way! lolol.

Good luck, I'd love to hear what you come up with!
