Changes over the holidays

Who or what do you miss this holiday season? What traditions have you personally seen change over the years that you'd like to see back?

I miss hosting Christmas dinner at my house with my Mom, my sister and nephews and my brother and his family. Even when everyone was bickering, it brought all of us together for one day with little bickering.

This day last year we surprised my Mom by showing up on her doorstep. My kids are pretty sad today that we couldn't do it again this year.

I miss my older dau and son being in the area. As we all gathered at dau's house and she rented a LONG table so we could all sit together. We each brought diff foods and there was always plenty for each of us to take home leftovers. This was all back when my hubby was alive as well as Mom and my younger son was still home not married.
This was for Thanksgiving but we all stayed in our own homes to have Christmas dinner but visited that nite or early in the day.

Though they say you cannot really miss something you never had, I "miss" not having any children to share Christmas with.

A tradition I remember from my chidhood was when downtown's were the place people shopped (before malls) and all the store windows would be decorated with animated santa's, reindeers, etc....

hugs, train

I miss my parents. Though Christmas was rushed I would give anything to have one more with them. We would have Christmas at our house, drive to Maine to have Christmas with my parents, brothers and their families etc. and a big Christmas dinner, then rush off to have another Christmas in Maine with my in-laws and another Christmas dinner. We still do a Christmas with my brothers on the way to my in-laws but it just isn't the same.

I miss my parents and brother who have all passed on. Also, miss the slower-paced less commercialized holidays.

I miss Christmases when my dd's were little, even though it meant getting up really early. The girls would put milk and cookies out for Santa (and a carrot for the reindeer!). After they went to bed, DH and I would put their presents under the tree. We'd get maybe three or four hours of sleep, but it was a lot of fun.

I really do miss the TRUE meaning of Christmas. Seems like now that the younger generation growing up is only interested in gifts, gifts, gifts, and many more gifts...

This year we will miss my father-in-law. He really loved Christmas--he loved the family being together. Before the big Christmas Eve family party at a cousin's house, he'd have his kids & grandkids over for a casual, fun lunch. It will be sad without him this year.
