I lived with my grandparents, and until my mother moved away for work when I was three, she always lived within just a few blocks of our house.
I remember being with her at one particular small apartment complex (which is still there, largely unchanged, after all these years). Were were in the first-floor laundry room, and the door was propped wide open to keep it cool in there. My mother was doing the laundry and I was sitting in the doorway looking outside, across the (also small) parking lot. I remember seeing the ditch behind the parking lot and thinking there were tadpoles in there. I got up and scooted right over to the ditch to look for the tadpoles, and *splash*, I fell right in, catching myself on my hands and knees. It hadn't rained much, so there was only about 3-4 inches of water in there. My mother had taken off after me as soon as she saw me on the move, but you know little kids- they move faster than you think! I remember my mother picked me up and scolded me a little, and that's the end of the memory.
When I was in my 20's, I told my mother about that episode, and she remembered it clearly. She was astonished that I did because I hadn't had my second birthday when that happened.
