I made an "Open in an Emergancy" box when my neice graduated to take to college. It was a shoe box filled with trial size items that I had gotten over the year for free plus I had given her a Walmart gift card that she could use for anything she might need.

I had deodarent, tampons, single serve microwave food, shampoo/conditioner, individual packs of laundry detergent, gum, etc. Things that would give her a couple days before she had to run to the store when she found out she was out of something.

If I know the child is going to college I give them a gift card to the college book store. I also did this for Christmas presents to my nephews while they were attending college.

What I have done is go to the Dollar store and purchase the manicuring sets and give them these. They really seem to like them even if they aren't going on to college.

I gave one to my cousins daughter as a wedding shower gift and she was so happy that she would no longer have to use her mom's any more.

and it wouldn't be very expensive for you.
