Books for the Lenten Season
As we enter into Lent (well, we entered 2 1/2 weeks ago!), it is good to have spiritually edifying reading material.
Here are a few books that you may find of benefit:
Unseen Warfare
edited by Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain and revised by Theophan the Recluse
Orthodox Lent, Holy Week and Easter:
Liturgical Texts with Commentary
by Hugh Wybrew
Living without Hypocrisy:
Spiritual Counsels of the Elders of Optina
by The Optina Elders
translated by Archimandrite George (Schaefer)
Kindling the Divine Spark:
Teachings on How to Preserve Spiritual Zeal
by St. Theophan the Recluse
First Fruits of Prayer: A Forty-Day Journey through the Canon of St. Andrew
by Frederica Mathewes-Green
Courage to Pray
Metropolitan Anthony Bloom
The Bible and the Holy Fathers for Orthodox
Johanna Manley, ed.
Great Lent
Alexander Schmemann
That's about the extent of books that would be good for Non-Orthodox. Not all are easy to understand, but most are very readable.
May your preparations for Easter be spiritually profitable!
Love
Elizabeth
