I would definitely agree with marigolds. They are easy to grow and bloom all summer long as long as you snap off any dead blossoms. They are also pretty.

Container vegetable gardens are also fun. I grew green peppers and tomatoes in large pots on my deck and it was so easy. They even have some tomatos that are meant for container gardens. Herbs are another good idea. They smell great and can be used in cooking and if you grow them in containers they can be brought inside for the winter and keep on growing.
