I don't know about school lunches in other places (though from what I read in the news they are as bad) but I wouldn't even go by the lunch menus here. They are fat laden and so predictable that the kids knew by what day of the week it is what the menu would be. Bleah!! After 4 months of ham and cheese sandwiches every Friday they were ready for something new.
Tuna is a hit here with the oldest dgd. Spaghetti-os (yuck) and pizza bites are too. Peanut butter sandwiches, chicken sandwiches with left over chicken and rice any meal.
