We are wilderness backpackers, and we camp all through the fall, winter, and spring. We go every federal holiday, since my DH works at the Pentagon. We start on Labor day holiday and there's a 3-day weekend just about every month. After Memorial Day we stop for the summer, because it just gets too hot and buggy here. We hike about a mile or so from the car to a spot we found, where we could put together a nice fire circle.
The trick is to wear lots of layers, as has been said.
