I used a harness on both my girls. With my first we only had one car and dh took it to work so I had to take the big English carriage to go and get grocery's and do the laundry every week along with a very active and fast walking 10 month old. The closest store was still a mile away, and we had to cross 3 major roadways to get there and at times that harness was a lifesaver for both of us. With our second child (18 years later) our street is a shortcut to avoid going thur the downtown area, we used the harness while we were doing yard work to make sure she did not dart into the street.
