I dont know what the people do in thrift shops in your area, but where I live, things that are donated that are stained, ripped etc.. they rip off the buttons and put them all in a bag and sell them to crafters lucky enough to get there first. I get mine because my mom volunteers there and lets me know when ever there is a bag sitting around and I quickly go grab them.
